This year we have made a few small changes to our club championships following on from feedback from our members. There will again be club championships for road, off-road and fell running but new for this year we are trying out a marathon/ultra-championship. We will also still have our parkrun competition and club competitor. We believe that this format upholds the stated club ethos:

• to encourage participation irrespective of ability in competitive opportunities and support local races.

There are a lot of rounds and different events, please remember these are fun championships and we don’t expect people to enter every event. Please look after yourselves by selecting your favourite races and stay injury free.

The Competitions will run from 1st April 2019 to the 29th February 2020. The competition is open to all first claim members who compete in these designated races and who have paid their Club subscription in full. There will be separate identical competitions for men and for women. The best six performances for each member will be totalled in the Road and Off Road. Where two or more members have scored an equal number of points at the end of the season, final positions will be determined on head-to-head and if these are equal then positions are tied. As a general rule only members who are current members at the end of the year (31st March) will be eligible for awards.

With this as with all other matters the decision of the committee will be final. Where possible all races are local and where practicable a tie in with races organised by other Leeds based running clubs will be sought. The club is not responsible for finding your name on the results so please ensure when entering races that you indicate that you are a Hyde Park Harriers club member. Please wear your club colours at designated races. If you do not wear your vest/shirt you may not get any points. The club is affiliated to UKA therefore we are obliged to follow their rules with regard to transfer of race numbers. If a member gives/receives their number without using the official transfer system then they will be disqualified from scoring points in that race and repeat offenders maybe disqualified from all club competitions in that year. Members should be aware that some race organisers (eg Abbey Dash) have no system for the transfer of race numbers.

Road Championship

New this year – We have made changes to the divisions this year. There now will be 2 divisions – a Premier and a 1st division (still separate championships for men and women). 30 named runners in the Premier division. This has been decided by –

*All runners who scored in the Premier division last year.

*All runners who scored in the 1st division last year.

*The remaining places by the top finishers in the 2nd division.

If someone hasn’t rejoined the club then another runner from the 2nd division will be added. The 1st division will have everyone else in.

Best 6 scores count. Points will be awarded 30 for first finisher in division down to 1 point for 30th. Should there be more scorers in the 1st division they will all get 1 point.

Also new this year there will be an additional 3, 2 and 1 points available to the top 3 finishers no matter what division.

At the end of the year at least 8 will be relegated and promoted, if more haven’t scored than they will be relegated.

There will also be an all new parallel Age graded championship this year. 1 division, 100 points for best and so on. Again best 6 scores to count.

Fell Championship

The Fell championship is growing every year, we have definitely come a long way from a little city runner club. Races are categorised as A (hardest) to C (milder) on the basis of the amount of climb, and short (S), medium (M) or long (L) based on distance. The races and categories for each HPH Championship event are listed below:

Rnd 1 Jack Bloor May 14th 8.4k BS

Rnd 2 Pen-Y-Ghent June 1st 10.5k AM

Rnd 3 Otley Chevin June 5th 2.8m CS

Rnd 4 Baildon Canter July TBC 5k BS

Rnd 5 Burnsall Classic Aug TBC 1.5m AS

Rnd 6 Half Yorkshireman Sept TBC 15m BL

Rnd 7 Burley Moor Nov TBC 11k BM

Rnd 8 Mytholmroyd Dec TBC 10k BM

Rnd 9 Stanbury Splash Jan TBC 6.7m BM

Rnd 10 Ilkley Fell Feb TBC 8k AS

The majority of the races that have been chosen are suitable for beginners to fell running, and the aim is to keep the Championship as inclusive as possible. However, fell running can be both fun and challenging, with some inherent hazards. Senior runners at any event are responsible for their own safety.

The competition is open to all first claim members who compete in these designated races and who have paid their Club subscription in full. 10 races have been chosen for the competition, but only your best six performances will count. This means that there’s no pressure to attend every race, if you have any queries or concerns about any of the races or take a look at the HPH Fell and Cross Country Facebook Page or the HPH Website Fell Running Reports.

For Men and Women: 1st HPH = 10 points 2nd HPH = 9 points 3rd HPH = 8 points 4th HPH = 7 points 5th HPH = 6 points 6th HPH = 5 points 7th HPH = 4 points 8th HPH = 3 points All other HPH racers get 2 points.

In the event of a tie at the end of the season, the winner will be decided on head-to-head and then if it’s still a draw, on participation. If there is still a draw after that then they share it.

Any member intentionally failing to meet the rules of the race e.g. not taking FRA minimum kit when instructed by race organisers will be disqualified from all future HPH fell competitions. Use appropriate kit for the course and conditions: Members do not need to wear their vests etc to get points because all kit worn and used must be suitable to the conditions of the course on the day. The FRA strongly recommend that all runners are aware of the basics of hypothermia, the symptoms, treatments, and how to avoid it. The fell running, and Hyde Park Harriers ethos of showing consideration for other runners and their safety should be followed, even if it means losing vital Fell Championship points!

Personal Conduct: The FRA also advise that all runners taking part in races should behave respectfully to other competitors, race officials and members of the public sharing the same area of countryside. Adhering to the Countryside Code is important for ALL Fell Races. To qualify for points in the HPH Championship, runners must be full members of the club. It would be helpful if members would register as a Hyde Park Harrier when entering each race. In all respects the decision of the committee is final.

Parkrun

We are very lucky at the club that we have Ken Fox pulling all our parkrun info together and doing the reports each week full of interesting facts, even though he isn’t a member.

From April we are running a similar format as last year apart from there are now 12 scoring chances. You will still be judged on age grading. So April to the end of February will be the calendar year . Each month you will be given a parkrun which counts for the month. April will be Potternewton, you can run there all month or just once, only your best age grading will count. As well as the 11 months we count (April to end of Feb) we are also going to count your best from Woodhouse Moor at any point in that time. We are hoping this will be enjoyable to everyone. It will free up people to volunteer and they can still tour. We will move around the local parkruns each month. We may arrange group outings. December is the exception to the rest of the championship as any parkrun will count this month as we know people travel around to see family.

Points this year will be 100 down to 1 with separate championships for Men and Ladies We are hopeful that Ken will still be able to put together his weekly reports.

Information and rules for the 2019/20 championship year:

The series takes place between April and March and consists of ten designated races with distances ranging from 26.2 miles to approximately 81 miles. The competition is open to all first claim members who compete in these designated races and who have paid their membership fees in full. There will be separate identical competitions for men and for women. The best four performances for each member will be totalled. Where two or more members have scored an equal number of points at the end of the season, final positions will be determined on head-to-head, and if these are equal, on participation… if still equal then positions are tied.

All races entered from the race list count and therefore there is no minimum number of races to score in the championship. For Men and Women: 1st HPH = 20 points 2nd HPH = 19 points 3rd HPH = 18 points 4th HPH = 17 points 5th HPH = 16 points 6th HPH = 15 points 7th HPH = 14 points 8th HPH = 13 points 9th HPH = 12 points All other HPH racers get 10 points. Bonus points will be awarded to those running ultras with a tiered points system reflecting additional distance covered (where appropriate) and as detailed in the race table below.

Results for each Punk Panther race, although often offering a choice of distance, will be taken on total race time. Points will be distributed according to finishing time in the results table with additional points awarded for those doing extra distances so choose your tactics for championship points wisely! Some ultra races allow participants to change up, or down, distance during the race. This is accepted, where authorised by the race organiser, and final finishing position for the race (awarded by the race organiser) shall be accepted by the committee.

As a general rule only members who are current members at the end of the year (31st March) will be eligible for awards. With this, as with all other matters, the decision of the committee will be final. Use appropriate kit for the course and conditions: Members do not need to wear their vests etc to get points because all kit worn and used must be suitable to the conditions of the course on the day and meet the kit requirements of the race organiser.

The majority of the races that have been chosen are suitable for beginners to ultra running, and the aim is to keep the Championship as inclusive as possible. Marathon and ultra running can be both fun and challenging. As the majority of these races are off-road they come with some inherent hazards. Senior runners at any event are responsible for their own safety. The club is affiliated to UKA therefore we are obliged to follow their rules with regard to transfer of race numbers. If a member gives their number to someone else without using the official transfer system then they may be disqualified from all club competitions in that year. Members should be aware that some race organisers have no system for the transfer of race numbers. When entering races please indicate that you are a member of Hyde Park Harriers. At the end of the competition year the designated races will be reviewed and at least one will be changed in order to keep the competition fresh and introduce new running challenges. In all respects the decision of the committee is final.

Club Competitor Championship

The Club Competitor of the Year is a competition within the club that goes some way to meeting three aspects of the Club Ethos by: • encouraging members to compete to the best of their ability, • encouraging members to get involved in local races and; • recognising the achievements of individuals at all levels

Unlike the Club Championship which seeks to establish who in the club has run the fastest at designated races, the format recognises those athletes that have regularly represented the club throughout the year. The Club Competitor of the Year takes place annually during eleven months from April until the end of February in line with the UK Athletics calendar. There is a separate Club Competitor of the Year competition for men and women. All first claim members who have paid their Club subscriptions in full and completed a designated race will be awarded one point.

The competition for 2019/20 is based on participation on 45 races. These are ten designated road races, ten designated off road races, ten designated fell races, 5 x PECO cross country races, 3 scores from the Marathon/Ultra championship, 2 long relays (Calderdale and LCW), 3 short relay (Golden Acre, Washburn and Danefield ), 1 of the cross country events (Yorkshire, Northern and Nationals) and our own Summer Mile race. All members who compete in any designated race will be awarded 1 point. If there is a tie at the end of the year then we will recognise both or more competitor’s. We will be using the official results. To claim your point you must be registered as yourself and as a Hyde Park Harrier, so please register as Hyde Park Harriers and notify the organisers of any error or omission. You must also be classed as a finisher. In all respects the decision of the committee is final.
