Harriers of the Month and Chair’s Blog – August 2025

A quieter month for running as summer holidays take precedence! Still, lots of great HPH stuff happening – starting with our:

HARRIERS OF THE MONTH – AUGUST 2025

  • Caroline Young – Out on a Tues club run, Caroline noticed a visually impaired lady struggling to cross the main road in Headingley as the crossing had been suspended so there was no safe way to cross. Caroline led a few members of group 4 to stop the traffic, and guided the lady across the road. Great spot and instincts Caroline!
  • Gordon Crawford – Gordon’s Golden Mile was fantastic and set another veteran record!

Well done to all our nominees, copied below:

  • Burnsall Classic racers – One of the biggest teams at this race (9 of 81 runners), the HPH fell crew has been turning out well for all champs races so far this year and Burnsall was no different. There were also two runners in the top 10!
  • Coralie Bell – Setting a new club record at the Golden Mile – congrats Coralie!
  • Daisy Wales – ran a brilliant new PB at Brownlee 5km for second female and 18.31.

THANK YOU!

A huge thank you to all our leaders this month – Alice H, Ben H, Bethan M, Cara G, Cat M, Eleanor M, Ellie W, Emily C, George A, Hannah L, Honor B, Jane P, Jayne G, Jonathan S, Kevin L, Lisa B, Lorraine B, Lucy R, Mike G, Naomi A, Richard C, Richard K and Will D!

If you’d like to give leading a go, speak to any of our existing leaders or committee members and we’ll give you all the support and help you need.

SUNDAY SESSIONS

As the days start to get shorter, we thought it was high time to bring back our Sunday club sessions! Historically these have mostly consisted of canal runs and these will definitely feature. However, throughout the autumn, I’ll be hosting some different sessions to take advantage of various locations around the city centre. Some weeks may involve intervals at West Park, or the ITV building loop on Kirkstall loop, others might be hill sessions in Meanwood (the dreaded Meanwood Valley Pendulum session may make an appearance) – keep an eye out for full details on Spond!

If anyone has any good ideas to a Sunday session or would like to lead one, drop us a line!

HIGHLIGHTS OF AUGUST 2025

  • August means the York 10K – always a favourite of your humble scribe! Half a dozen Harriers took to the streets of Eboracum/Jorvik (depending on your historic preference)! We had some great performances despite the damp conditions, with Doug B finishing in the top 20!
  • The HPH veterans continued to turn out in force for the YVAA Grand Prix races, including Slaithwaite and Northowram!
  • Our Summer League continued, with races at Lotherton Hall and Roundhay. The former was yet another hot one – well done everyone who took part! Congratulations to Nick S, who finished second overall in the Roundhay 10K!
  • Julie and Andy represented the club at the Escrick 10K – well done both!
  • Alison took on the Fleetwood Half Marathon in hot condition, nice one!
  • Nine Harriers took part in the Burnsall Classic – a brutal short distance fell race, less than two miles of straight up and straight back down again! We even made the news!
  • Abdu, Coralie and Gordon took on the Golden Mile with some fantastic results, including a new veteran record for Gordon!
  • Four Harriers ran the August edition of the Leeds 5K series – nice work folks!
  • We finished the month with a good turnout for the Meanwood Valley Trail Race, with Coralie finishing as 2nd woman and three Harriers in the top 10! Well done everyone who ran!

As ever, apologies to anyone I’ve overlooked in this month’s blog – well done to everyone who’s got out and about in the heat (and the occasional downpour) this month! Lots of fun stuff to look forward to in September and beyond – check out the full blog here.
