There were 65 HPH women and 55 HPH men out parkrunning across 38 venues worldwide this week.
Twenty-eight Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Two of these courses were new to the HPH list. These were Brickfields Park in Bath (not to be confused with Brickfields parkrun in Ireland) by Sam Townson and Altona Beach in Australia by Louise Gardham.
Brickfields Park parkrun course is two laps on grass around Brickfields Park followed by an out-and-back on tarmac along The Linear Park. Brickfields Park is at the heart of Whiteway, Twerton and Southdown in Bath which are some of the most disadvantaged wards in the country. Twenty-three percent of people live in purpose-built blocks of flats with extremely limited outdoor space. In 2022 Brickfields Park was chosen to become an exemplar park for accessibility for women and girls. Consultation with young people was undertaken to understand what they wanted from Brickfields Park. In particular the charity “Make Space for Girls” took the opportunity to understand the needs of teenage girls. Thanks to Reimagining Parks donors and Bath and North East Somerset Council Community Infrastructure Levy, the teenage girls’ vision for Brickfields has been realised with the addition of many new features to the park. The Linear Park is a little section of the Two Tunnels Greenway, which was part of the old Somerset & Dorset Railway Line that closed in the 1960s.
Altona Beach parkrun course is an out-and-back course on the shores of Port Phillip Bay between the Apex Park and Truganina Park in the Melbourne suburb of Altona. Truganina Park is a 25-hectares recreational and conservation park, ‘recycled’ from the former Altona Landfill Tip, which was closed in 1998. A key feature of the Park is the 100 Steps to Federation, a stone staircase made from Bluestone basalt rocks recycled from the Tip. the top of the 100 steps is the turning point for the parkrun course, although thankfully the course winds its way to the top via a concrete track alongside the actual steps. The steps lead to the highest land point between Melbourne and the You Yangs mountain ranges, where you can take in sweeping panoramic views of Melbourne City, Port Phillip Bay and the adjoining Cheetham Wetlands. The 17-metres high mound is topped by a sculpture called the Time Beacon, created by the artist Cameron Robbins.
There were three first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Douglas Blackwood in a PB time of 17:12 at Woodhouse Moor; Amy Ramsden-Young in 19:40 at Rother Valley; and Thomas Moulding in 17:14 on his first time at Roberts Park. There were three other PBs. These were by Sophie Studholme with 24:25 at Woodhouse Moor; Tobias Adkins with 19:48 at Potternewton; and Rebecca Goody with 48:08 at Conyngham Hall.
There weren’t any new members of the official parkrun clubs, but both Claire Booth and Bartosz Lewandowski reached 300 parkruns with their runs at Woodhouse Moor.
Top female Age Grade% was 76.27% by Amy Ramsden-Young at Rother Valley and top male Age Grade% was 75.24% by Thomas Moulding at Roberts Park.
