There were 53 HPH women and 60 HPH men out parkrunning across 46 venues worldwide this week.
Twenty-nine Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Three of these courses were new to the HPH list. These were Parc Coed Gwilym by Sam Dooley; Oude Warande and Balijbos in the Netherlands by Cara Gates and Jessica Wanless respectively.
Parc Coed Gwilym is in the village of Clydach to the north east of Swansea. The parkrun course is two laps on a tarmac path around playing fields, followed by an out and back section along a canal towpath finishing with a further two laps around the playing field. The park includes a variety of sports facilities as well as beautiful walking trails and a flower garden. There is a Heritage and Information Centre alongside the canal. It contains a timeline of the village of Clydach from 1794 to the present day. There is also a Portrait Bench alongside the route in the park. Here you can sit and take a breather while having your photograph taken with local heroes memorialised in steel cut-outs.
The Oude Warande in Tilburg was built in 1712 by order of William VIII of Hesse-Kassel and is one of the few intact star forests in the Netherlands. A star forest is so named because from a central point a number of avenues, usually six or eight, go to the corners and the outer edges. Over the years the park declined but in the 1980s a renovation was begun that was completed in 2008. The old avenues were restored, diseased trees harvested, the bogged pond deepened and ‘wild’ paths removed. A characteristic animal in the Warande is the Siberian ground squirrel. Probably these non-native animals have been left behind from the Tilburg animal park that was located here. The state of the native red squirrel does not seem to be suffering. There are also general songbirds and birds of prey such as buzzard and forest owl. A total of 86 bird species have been counted, all quite common, which applies to the vast majority of the entire flora and fauna. The parkrun course is a single lap in the shape of a windmill with four triangular blades, with the finish in the middle. The course is on unpaved paths.
Balijbos is a nature reserve in a forest in South Holland, Netherlands, known for its walking and running trails. In the middle of the natural forest is a wild, open part that is maintained by Galloway cattle. The parkrun course is two large loops through the forest, followed by a small loop. The entire route is on paved forest paths. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed at this event.
There were two first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Adam Lomas in 17:07 at Woodhouse Moor and Thomas Moulding in 18:24 at Potternewton.. There were eight PBs. These were by Lucas Johnstone with 18:05 at Woodhouse Moor; Abigail Prudhoe with 21:05 at York; Rosalie Dang with 29:29 at Roundhay; Vicky Houghton 24:37 at Penistone; Paul Farmery with 38:12 and Rebecca Goody with 45:23 at Roberts Park; Sinead O’Hara with 26:08 at Owairaka in New Zealand; and Andrew Carrier with 19:44 at University of Galway in Ireland.
There were no new members of the official parkrun clubs, but Richard Edwards reached 400 parkruns with his run at Woodhouse Moor and Anna Stocks reached 450 parkruns with her run at Roundhay.
Top female Age Grade% was 74.24% by Clare Slorach on her first run at University of Galway and top male Age Grade% was 78.70% by Gordon Crawford at Woodhouse Moor.
