A few weeks back Hyde Park Harriers very own marathon man Phil Hammond took on his latest challenge, The Great Barrow Challenge where he was hoping to raise money for the Veterans charity.   This is 10 marathons in 10 days.  The set up is that there are 5 different routes run twice, multi terrain of a minimum of 26.2 miles.  To add to the fun they get maps and instructions to follow.

If this wasn’t enough he then decided to add on the Stoke marathon on his way home!

Here is the collection of daily updates we received –

Day 1 – 5hrs 07 mins.  Only went the wrong way 4 times, not bad for an old man.  22 degrees today gonna get hotter this week.

Day 2 – 27 miles exactly, no detours!  In 4hrs 55 mins 15 secs.  Lovely hot day again.  Mostly off road through fields so I’m just taking it steady.

Day 3 – 5hrs exactly.  No detours again finally getting the hang of map reading.  Very hot today suntan is coming along nicely.  Only 8 more to go.

Day 4 – Hi everyone.  4 down 7 to go.  Best time yet 4hrs 47 mins 46 secs and in the rain too.

Day 5 – 27.2 miles and today is marathon number 50 in 5hrs 02 mins 36 secs.  Halfway point today and its getting hotter.  What a holiday beats 2 weeks sitting by the pool. You can keep up to date on thegbc.co.uk website.

Day 6 – My best time yet, 4hrs 43 mins 25 secs.  Only 25 degrees out there today.  Better than working.  Thanks for the extra support form Hyde Park.

Day 7 – That was a hot one, in 34 degrees and 27 miles.  Managed 5hrs 15 mins exactly.  Happy with that, hope tomorrow is cooler.

Day 8 – 4hrs 38 mins 12 secs.  My fastest time yet.  A lot cooler today thank goodness.  Just 3 more to go now.  Getting sleep afterwards is hard because its too hot in my tent.

Day 9 –  27.2 miles in 4hrs 50 mins 08 secs.  Happy with that in this heat.  Forecast is 30 degrees tomorrow the last day.

Day 10 – Last day done, 4hrs 52 mins 08 secs.  Very happy with that.  That’s 4hrs 55 mins average over the 10 days.  One to go on Sunday.

His total time was 49hrs 12mins and 02 secs.  He was 8th out of 16 who did the 10 in 10.

Day 11 – 11th one done in 4hrs 13 mins 57 secs, GET IN!! Bloody hilly though but I’d do it again.

Awesome work Mr Hammond.  That medal rail must be getting rather full.
