There were 50 HPH women and 62 HPH men out parkrunning across 42 venues worldwide this week.

Twenty-three Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Three of these courses were new to the HPH list – all outside the UK. These were Dundalk in Ireland by Chris Worfolk; Cyril Curtain Reserve in Australia by Louise Gardham; and Fugan unga kansui koen in Japan by Vikki Hawkins.

Dundalk parkrun course is three laps around the edge of the playing fields alongside Dundalk Institute of Technology in County Louth, Ireland. The Dundalk Institute of Technology has developed and implemented a Healthy Campus Plan. This adopts a holistic understanding of health, takes a whole campus approach and aspires to create a learning environment and organisational culture that enhances the health and wellbeing of its community and enables people to achieve their full potential. They aim to increase the use of the campus by exploring the introduction of walking trails on campus, promote travel methods to college that increase physical activity and promote smoking reduction initiatives; Embed mental health considerations into daily college life through policy development and wellbeing initiatives, creating a lasting positive impact across the entire community; Educate staff and students of the benefits of a balanced nutritional diet through the provision of practical information such as recipes and skills to produce healthy meals; Develop a communication mechanism where all staff and students are easily aware of what and where physical activities are taking place across the Institute and how they can participate in any of these activities.

Cyril Curtain Reserve parkrun consists of three loops of a section of Cyril Curtain Reserve in the Melbourne suburb of Williamstown. The course is on a mixture of pathways, gravel and grass. The reserve is mostly grassy and bordered by scrubby vegetation next to the water. There are some trees dotted about and plenty of tables throughout the reserve. It is one of several parks and reserves in Hobsons Bay where dogs are allowed off-leash. There are a few areas where you need to beware of snakes in summer. Cyril Curtain was a distinguished Australian biochemist who was born in Williamstown. He was also involved in many community activities in Williamstown and Melbourne’s Inner West. His concerns for foreshore planning and conservation were recognised by the naming of the section of the foreshore park opposite his residence.

Fugan unga kansui koen parkrun is an out-and-back course on either side if the Fugan Canal in Toyama City in Japan. Toyama is a seaside city about 200 km north of Nagoya and 300 km northwest of Tokyo. The city has been designated an environmental model city by the national government for its efforts to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Fugan Unga Kansui Park is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Toyama. It is a beautiful wide-open space featuring sprawling lawns and a picturesque canal. It is also home to one of the most beautiful Starbucks stores in the world.

There were four first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Edward Hale in a PB time of 19:48 and Abigail Prudhoe in a PB time of 22:31 at Temple Newsam; Douglas Blackwood in 17:29 at Eastville; and Thomas Moulding in 17:38 at Lytham Hall. There were seven other PBs. These were by Catherine McGuire with 26:56 at Cross Flatts; Jonathan Spain with 17:48 and Harrison Grange with 27:30 at Fountains Abbey; Chris Jones with 22:12 and Rebecca Gray with 27:02 at Roberts Park; Caite Burke with 23:51 at Chevin Forest; and Elizabeth Wardale with 33:39 at Whinlatter Forest.

Sarah Underwood and Rob Riley joined the parkrun 250 club with their runs at Keswick and Fitzmaurice Park respectively.

Top female Age Grade% was 72.52% by Carol Rogers at Worden and top male Age Grade% was 78.53% by Chris Jones at Roberts Park.
