parkrunday 2nd August 2025

There were 60 HPH women and 76 HPH men out parkrunning across 50 venues worldwide this week.

Thirty Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Six of these courses were new to the HPH list. These were Christie Park in Coleraine by Jonathan Spain and Helen Baddow; Woodlands in Scarborough by Anna Moger; Christchurch Park in Ipswich by Rob Riley; East Holmes Field in Ilkley at its inaugural by Edward Hale, Robert Butler and Philip Fisher; You Yangs Regional Park in Australia by Louise Gardham; and Yamaguchi Kirarahaku kinen koen in Japan by Vikki Hawkins.

Christie parkrun course is an out and back route alongside the river Bann on permanent paths. It starts in Christie Park in Coleraine and extends down to Somerset Riverside Park to the south. The Google reviews of the park are varied. One says: “Lovely riverside walk and all flat. Wildlife on the river and all around. Has cafes, toilets and parking.” Another says: “Rat infested river walk and not just the animals.”

Woodlands parkrun course is another out and back route. It follows the trackbed of the former Scarborough-Whitby railway. It starts in Scarborough and heads north along the shared 21.7 mile walking, cycle path and bridleway called the Cinder Track. It is at the opposite end of the Cinder Track to Cinder Track parkrun at the Whitby end.

Christchurch Park is a historical area of rolling lawns, wooded areas, and delicately created arboreta close to the town centre of Ipswich. The park has various facilities including a children’s play area, tennis courts, table tennis, bowling greens and outdoor gym equipment. The distinguished Tudor house, Christchurch Mansion, is located at the park’s southern entrance and holds a public museum and art gallery. The park belonged to various noble families as private land throughout its history but was purchased by the Ipswich Borough Council in 1894 and opened as the town’s first public park in 1895. The parkrun course is two and a bit laps through the park. It is on tarmac paths. It is not flat.

East Holmes Field in Ilkley is the latest parkrun course with a Leeds postcode (LS29). It was due to hold its inaugural parkrun event on 26th July but this was postponed due to travellers on the course. The course is four clockwise laps on a mixture of grass and compacted trail round the perimeter of East Holmes Field between the Lido and the River Wharfe. The start and finish is next to the Skatepark. The course includes many sections with tree roots which may make it challenging for buggies.

You Yangs parkrun course is a single lap on a mixture of gravel paths, trail paths and clay in the middle of You Yangs Regional Park in southern central Victoria, Australia – about 50 km south west of Melbourne. The park provides a range of habitats for wildlife. More than 200 species of birds have been recorded and koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, brush-tail possums, echidnas and lizards are commonly seen. It also has a rich variety of plant species. Tall eucalypts such as manna gum, yellow gum and river red gum give way to sparse undergrowth of native shrubs and groundcovers. Patches of wattle and drooping sheoaks also occur. The endangered brittle greenhood orchid is one of 30 species of orchids found in the park. The highest point in the You Yangs is Flinders Peak. From the top you get uninterrupted views out to Melbourne and Geelong.

Yamaguchi Kirarahaku kinen koen parkrun course is a fairly flat one on paved paths around the Yamaguchi Kirara Expo Memorial Park. Yamaguchi Kirara Expo Memorial Park is an athletic park full of natural beauty where everyone from children to seniors can enjoy sports and recreation. The facilities include a multipurpose dome with a field of artificial turf, a soccer/rugby field, a sports ground, a swimming pool, and more. There is also a large adventure playground, a beach for playing in the sand and water, and Japan’s largest lawn area, making it a popular spot for families. All toilets and playground equipment within Kirara Expo Memorial Park can be used free of charge by parkrunners. It is a relatively new parkrun venue, having held only ten events to date. Surprisingly the number of finishers is very low, having yet to reach double figures.

There were six first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Amy Ramsden-Young in 19:54 at Woodhouse Moor; Josh Dawson in 18:27 at Lister Park; Cara Gates in 22:07 at Barnsley; Rupert Jordan in 17:42 at Belton House; Clare Slorach in 21:33 at Potternewton; and Vikki Hawkins who was first female and first overall in 43:27 at Yamaguchi Kirarahaku kinen koen.

There were thirteen PBs. These were by Reuben Keating with 17:07, Caite Burke with 22:10 and Sohebuzzaman Khan with 27:58 at Woodhouse Moor; Oliver Isaac with 20:06 at Wakefield Thornes; Simon McGrath with 19:21 at Warrington; Richard Cartwright with 22:38, Jonathan Pryor with 24:56, Ralph Kidner with 25:00 and Jaz Bangerh with 34:12 at Rothwell; Jonathan Carpenter with 24:20 at Roundhay; Alasdair Fellows with 28:35 at Perry Hall; Vicky Houghton with 25:22 at Selby; and Paul Farmery with 40:59 at Roberts Park.

Meg Coleman and Daniel Richardson joined the parkrun 25 club with their runs at Woodhouse Moor and Fulwell Quarry respectively.

Top female Age Grade% was 75.38% by Amy Ramsden-Young at Woodhouse Moor and top male Age Grade% was 77.71% by Chris Jones at Rothwell.
