There were 51 HPH women and 72 HPH men out parkrunning across 55 venues worldwide this week.
Thirty-one Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Five of these were new to the HPH list. These were Unoki in Japan by Vikki Hawkins; Wezenlanden in the Netherlands by Michael Vargas; Edenbrook Country by Lucas Johnstone; Fire Service College in Moreton-in-Marsh by George Fidczuk and Lucy Bonnett; and Młynówka Królewska in Poland by Lara Chapman.
Unoki parkrun is a double out and back on paved paths along the east bank of the Tama River in southern Tokyo. The name Unoki translates into English as Cormorant Tree. The area was named by Japanese fishermen as they would often see flocks of these birds resting in the trees along the Tama River. The course goes through Unoki Ryokuchi – an area which primarily consists of open-air ball fields used for baseball, football, rugby, American football, and lacrosse. The course also goes past the headquarters of Canon Inc who produce my favourite cameras.
Park de Wezenlanden is in the municipality of Zwolle. Zwolle has 33 parks and between 2004 and 2006, the municipality won the prize for the greenest municipality in the Netherlands. The Wezenlanden park is the most visited park in Zwolle. Every year on 5th May, the Overijssel Liberation Festival, the largest liberation festival in the Netherlands, is held here with more than 150,000 visitors. There are also a number of other annual festivals such as the Balloon Spectacle, CityMoves and Graspop. It is also the place where circuses pitch their tent when they visit Zwolle. The park has a petting zoo with playground, the largest skate rink in Zwolle, a basketball court, the panna football field and many hiking trails. The parkrun course is three laps on paved paths and dirt tracks.
Edenbrook Country Park is located in Fleet, Hampshire. The park was created as part of Edenbrook and Edenbrook Village, a new community of 600 homes. The park boasts 82 acres of environmentally biodiverse meadows, wetlands and woodlands, home to a number of wildlife species, all connected by a network of footpaths, boardwalks and cycle paths. Development of the park began in 2008 and in 2019 it was handed over to Hart District Council. The parkrun course is two laps on mixed terrain, mostly compacted gravel paths.
Moreton-in-Marsh is a market town in the Cotswolds. The parkrun course is a three lap multi-terrain course starting and finishing at the Fire Service College to the east of the town centre. The course goes close to the Four Shire Stone which before the reorganisation of county boundaries in 1931 marked the meeting point of the historic counties of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire. It now is down to three having lost Worcestershire. Dogs are not allowed at this parkrun.
Młynówka Królewska Park is located in Kraków. The parkrun course is a straight section, followed by two loops then a return back along the straight. It is run entirely on forest trails.
There were four first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Clare Slorach in 21:44 at Potternewton; Lucas Johnstone in 17:38 at Edenbrook Country; Thomas Moulding in 17:52 at Scunthorpe; and Rupert Jordan in 17:15 at Leazes. There were seven PBs. These were by Dominique Harris with 55:14 Bramley; Kevin Longmate with 23:03 at Middleton Woods; Jack Gordon with 22:12 at Derry City; William Watkins with 23:59 at Temple Newsam; Robert Butler with 28:47 at Dalby Forest; Louise Gardham with 27:50 at Altona Beach; and Harry Webster with 23:46 at Chevin Forest.
Catherine McGuire joined the parkrun 250 club with her run at Armley.
Top female Age Grade% was 69.63% by Clare Slorach at Potternewton and top male Age Grade% was 80.29% by Rupert Jordan at Leazes.
