There were 62 HPH women and 76 HPH men out parkrunning across 50 venues worldwide this week.
Twenty-four Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Four of these were new to the HPH list. These were Moose Beach in Canada by Kay Jefferies; Maborikaigan yuhodo in Japan by Vikki Hawkins; Hiroshima Stadium Park, also in Japan, by Lucy McKerrell; and Elara Riparian Parklands in Australia by Philip Fisher.
Moose Beach parkrun takes place in Orillia, Ontario nestled at the confluence of Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe. Known as the “Sunshine City”, the city’s large waterfront attracts many tourists to the area every year. The area’s largest employer is Casino Rama – a large casino, hotel, and entertainment complex ln the reserve land of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation. The casino also includes several restaurants and a hotel and spa, as well as an acclaimed theatre, the Entertainment Center, which features seats for over 5,000 people and regularly hosts top-billing international shows and artists. The parkrun is an out and back route on paved path around Tudhope Park, Orillia, overlooking Lake Couchiching. The start and finish is close to Moose Beach.
Maborikaigan yuhodo parkrun is a two lap out-and-back course along the Umahori Coastal Promenade in the city of Yokosuka in the Greater Tokyo Area. A monument to sailor William Adams in nearby Tsukayama Park is a local landmark in Yokosuka. William Adams was the first Briton to set foot in Japan after arriving at Uraga aboard the Dutch trading vessel Liefde in 1600. In 1612, he was granted the title of samurai and a fief in Hemi within the boundaries of present-day Yokosuka, due to his services to the Tokugawa shogunate. James Clavell based his best-selling novel Shōgun on Adams’s life.
Hiroshima Stadium Park parkrun is three laps out-and back on a paved riverside path. It is close to the Atomic Bomb Dome, which is a prominent structure that remained standing in the area around the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. The ruin serves as a memorial to the over 140,000 people killed in the bombing. It is permanently kept in a state of preserved ruin as a reminder of the destructive effects of nuclear warfare.
Elara Riparian Parklands is a 24-hectare open-space and green corridor located in the Stockland Elara master-planned community in Marsden Park in North West Sydney. The parkrun course is one lap of a northern path loop, followed by two laps out and back, around the perimeter of the main water catchment area and the most northern path. The course is run entirely on permanent paths. The start and finish is close to the main BBQ facility area in the parklands.
There were three first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Richard Knighton in a PB time of 19:18 at Temple Newsam; Lucy McKerrell in 23:19 at Hiroshima Stadium Park; and Nick Shakhlevich in 19:50 at Conyngham Hall. There were seven other PBs. These were by Megan Foster with 22:02 at Woodhouse Moor; Sylvia McLellan with 31:04 at Armley; Clare Slorach with 20:37 at Rothwell; Anna Grugel Smith with 23:52 at Heslington; andrew Black with 20:55 at Endcliffe; Vicente Ponsoda with 24:08 at Chevin Forest; and Muyang Zhang with 29:31 at Worsley Woods.
There were four new members of any of the parkrun milestone clubs. These were Judith Meadows at Woodhouse Moor who did her 50th parkrun; Hanna Gul Ongun at Roundhay who did her 100th parkrun; Joe Lawley at Bo’ness Foreshore who did his 250th parkrun; and Louise Gardham who did her 300th parkrun at Woodhouse Moor.
The top female Age Grade% was 73.73% by Clare Slorach at Rothwell – the same time as last week at Pontefract. The top male Age Grade% was 77.52% by Rupert Jordan at Whitley Bay.
