parkrunday 10th October 2026

There were 49 HPH women and 77 HPH men out parkrunning across 53 venues worldwide this week.

Twenty-four Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Four of these were new to the HPH list. These were Breakwater in Canada by Kay Jefferies running and Trevor Raddings volunteering; Zonnestraal in the Netherlands by Helen Noyes; Whalan Reserve in Australia by Philip Fisher; and Spring Rock in the US by Edward Hale and Amber Edwards.

Breakwater Park in Kingston is on the waterfront overlooking Lake Ontario. The park underwent a major renovation as part of the “Make a Place for People Project” which aimed to inject new life into underperforming spaces; to encourage physical activity; and promote mental health through activity nodes where people meet, relax and play. The renovations were also influenced by the Swim Drink Fish Initiative with its vision of creating swimmable, drinkable, fishable water for everyone. The renovations were completed in July 2018. The park is very popular. It has grassy hills to enjoy a picnic; lots of sand for the full beach experience; Canada’s first urban natural swimming pier; and a shallow area perfect for young children. It is good for long walks with a dog with a view. The parkrun course is flat and entirely on tarmac paths. It is two laps.

Zonnestraal parkrun takes place through the Loosdrecht Forest and over moors on the outskirts of the city of Hilversum. The Zonnestraal was built in the 1930s as a sanatorium for TB. It is regarded as one of modern architecture’s most important buildings. The building features the classic design of the sanatorium, which focuses on as much open space and fresh air as possible. However, it still embodies the definition of the modern architecture by the immense amount of repetition, bold geometric shapes and the avoidance of superfluous decoration. The building is mostly made of transparent materials to allow as much light as possible to enter the patients’ rooms. The parkrun course is two laps, clockwise, on unpaved paths, through the woods and across the heath. Starting and finishing close to the Zonnestraal building.

Whalan Reserve is in the western Sydney suburb of Blacktown City. A variety of sport and recreation activities are played at Whalan Reserve. The sports include rugby league, football, AFL, cricket. Local recreation clubs include NSW Rocketry Association and Whalan Model Car Club. The parkrun course is relatively flat and single lap on combined grass, sealed old go-cart track and sealed running track.

Spring Rock Park is the flagship park of the Western Springs Park District in Chicago. It offers a wide range of recreational amenities for residents and visitors alike. This expansive 41.7-acre park provides ample space for various outdoor activities and community events. A large number of early residents of Western Springs were Quakers, and deeds often prohibited the sale of alcohol. Until recently, the village itself had not permitted the sale of alcoholic beverages but currently a number of establishments do sell such. Over time, with increased commuter settlement, Western Springs came to look less and less Quaker. The parkrun course is three laps on a mixture of grass and trail around the perimeter of the park.

There were two first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Gregor Lawson in a PB time of 20:43 at Loch Leven and Michael Vargas in 18:09 at Wetherby. There were nine other PBs. These were by Nathan Jeffs with 20:45 at Woodhouse Moor; Adam Sumnall with 24:41 at Roberts Park; Ralph Kidner with 27:13 at East Holmes Field; Daniel Richardson with 23:08 at Chevin Forest; David Hould with 29:06 at Lister Park; Charlie Jackett with 21:47 at Rickmansworth; Derrick Macey with 34:39 at Lincoln; Jago Webb with 20:07 at Quakers Walk; and Paul Robinson with 19:54 at Endcliffe.

There were four new members of the parkrun milestone clubs. These were Nathan Jeffs who reached his 50th parkrun and Sarah Underwood who reached her 300th parkrun, both running at Woodhouse Moor. Anna Stocks reached her 500th parkrun with her run at Roberts Park. Karly Stringer reached her 300th parkrun with her run at Cross Flatts.

The top female Age Grade% was 69.97% by Alison Hargreaves at Wodhouse Moor. The top male Age Grade% was 78.35% by Gordon Crawford at East Holmes Field.

Here are the details of this week’s parkrunning Hyde Park Harriers.
