HPH Off Road Championship
Well that’s it the 2016/17 Hyde Park Harriers Off Road Championship is done and dusted.
It was to be a 10 round championship with the best 7 scores to count but we lost one round when it was cancelled so 7 from 9 this year with the same division format as previous years.
In total we had 96 Harriers take part – 49 ladies and 47 men.
Round 1 – Bluebell Trail – 18
Round 2 – Ilkley Trail – 11
Round 3 – Apperley Bridge Canter – 28
Round 4 – Pudsey 10k – 20
Round 5 – Kirkstall 7 – 38
Round 6 – Chevin Chase – 22
Round 7 – Yorkshire XC – 7
Round 8 – Temple Newsam 10 – 29
Round 9 – PECO XC – 54
Ladies Premier Division –
15 ladies scored in the division and the wins were shared between 3 different people. Monica Padilla took an early lead with a second and two wins before she moved out the area and moved clubs. Rachel Eales picked up one win but it was last years winner Rebecca Gray who came through the strongest with 5 wins out of the 5 races she entered to take top spot with 100 points. The battle behind was very close with Monica finishing on 59 points, Robin Culshaw 56, Laura Cummings 55, Sarah farnell 54 and Claire Hougham 52 points.
Ladies 1st Division
12 ladies scored in the 1st division, with 8 taking a class win showing how open it was. Clare Evans took 2 wins while Emma Amor, Lois Gardner, Dote Stone, Lucy Rider, Jennifer Gridley, Clare Maxwell and Caroline Young all claim 1 win. Emma Amor ended up as the division winner on 106 points with Clare Evans 2nd on 93.
Ladies 2nd Division
22 ladies scored in the 2nd division with 4 taking a class win. Honor Baldry won the class 4 times out of 5 outings and Reena Mistry took 3 out of 3 when she entered having just the club part way through the year. Harriet Shaw and Ruth Hancox both took a win a piece. The top honours in the class though went to Samantha Scarlett who had a very consistent year to finish on 122 points with Honor Baldry claiming second with 99 points.
Men’s Premier Division
15 men scored in the premier division and 4 took a class win. David Driver took the first win of the year before moving out the area and club. Last years winner Chris Smith took 1 win, James Vickers 2 and Colin Tranter took 4 wins out of his 4 starts. It was James who took the top honours this year after a solid performance at every round leaving him on 130 points. Richard Edwards took second with 115 points.
Men’s 1st Division
14 men scored points and there was 3 different class winners. Ben Hartley took 1 win, Jimmy Sheldon 3 wins but it was class champion Scott Watson who took the most with 5 wins and 2 seconds to finish on 138 points. The battle for second was close with Jimmy pushing hard but John Blatherwick put in a strong year to take the runners up spot with 98 points.
Men’s 2nd Division
18 men scored points and 6 took class wins. Michael Vargas and Alec Francis joined part way through the year and took 2 wins each, while Jack Rose, Jeremy Forber, George Anderson and Curtis Parker-Milnes all took 1 each. Michael put in a late charge in the division to claim second place with 77 points but couldn’t catch Jack Rose who lead from round 1 to finish on 86 points.
Congratulations to all our winners and well done everyone who took part. The full promotion and relegation will take place in April when we know who has rejoined but for now please find attached the points and let us know if you see any issues.

Our next championship kicks off again on Easter Sunday and we will again have 10 rounds but this time only 6 rounds will count.
