Bronte 5 – June 6th

A lovely Thursday evening in Haworth awaiting 15 Harriers (12 men and 3 ladies)  for the latest round of the club road championship at the Bronte 5 mile event.

Its an interesting course.  Starting with a gradual climb which then gets very steep before flat section and steep down hill.  Then back round before running into the cricket field to finish.

What a night for the harriers it turned out to be with 5 claiming awards.  Amy Young was 2nd Female, Michael Vargas 3rd overall, Steve Rhodes 1st YM55, John Pratt 1st YM35 and Lee Taylor 2nd YM40.

As well as the above Michael who was first Harrier home scoring maximum points in the Premier division also got himself a new club record beating the previous best of Phil Goose by 1 second.  The new time is 29.02 “better than yesterday” was Michael’s comment (Chevin fell race had been the night before).

8th overall and 2nd Harrier home was Phil in a time of 31.31 while 3rd Harrier home taking the last bonus point was Steve Rhodes in a time of 32.45.  Steve also got top points in the Road Age grading championship with a score of 76.73.

Taking top points in the mens 1st division was John Pratt who came home 26th in a time of 34.19 “I spent half of it running up to Jonathan Spain and the other half watching him run further away from me”.

Lee Taylor and Chris Lodge got 2nd and 3rd points in the 1st division.

Amy Young had a strong run to take top points in the Women’s Premier division and a time of 32.56 “I hate/loved it all at once.  The hills were so hard, the flats were fairly ok, the downhills were well fun.  Think I was 6 seconds faster than last year which is good given how I’ve not run as much as usual.  Well done everyone, great race and £2.70 pints after not to be sniffed at”.  Amy also took the age grading honours with 72.64.

With only 3 ladies out they all score the bonus pints.  Zeni Bellwood was 2nd Harrier home and took top points in the 1st division finishing just ahead of Robyn Johnson who had a great evening.

Other comments –

Andrew Maddock – Felt tougher than I remember and enjoyed it in the end.

Richard Edwards – There is something really nice about this race even though its tough.  The fitness seems to be taking longer than I would like to return but had a nice run/walk before getting taken down on a sprint finish by Andrew.
