Canada Day parkrunday 1st July 2026

Liz and Chris Jones took advantage of the extra parkrun in Canada on 1st July (Canada Day) by popping over to British Columbia to run Penticton parkrun. Apparently there was some football competition going on over there and Chris fancied seeing a game after seeing one in the same competition back in 1966.

Liz finished in 57:50, just in front of Chris in 57:51. Top female Age Grade% was 36.69% by Liz Jones and top male Age Grade% was 30.14% by Chris Jones. Chris put his slower than usual time down to a lack of spittoons on the previous day’s wine tour. Giving him no option but to consume more wine than was strictly necessary.

The Penticton parkrun course is a flat two out-and-back laps on permanent paths along the southern shoreline of Okanagan Lake in the city of Penticton in British Columbia. It starts and finishes at The Peach – an “Iconic Penticton Landmark”, which is a spherical refreshment outlet painted to resemble a peach. There is an annual Peachfest in Penticton (Western Canada’s largest free festival on August 5th to 9th this year) to celebrate the local peach harvest. In the summer of 1991 hip hop artist MC Hammer just wrapped a concert during the Peachfest celebrations. Tensions boiled over, and young rioters ran rampant through the city. A handful set their sights on the city’s iconic waterfront peach-shaped ice cream stand, rolling the landmark into Okanagan Lake. The Penticton Peach was replaced the following year.
