Otley Chevin Fell race

Round 3 of the Hyde Park Harriers Fell championship saw 18 Harriers (10 men and 8 ladies) take on the Otley Chevin Fell race. Its a CS category run, only 4.5km.  Basically up for 689 ft, a short run across the top then all the way down again.

1st home and scoring top points was Adam Lomas in a time of 19.54.  He came home a strong 7th overall.

It was a solid run for Adam but he got a little bit of luck along the way.  2nd home and 13th overall in a time of 20.22 was winner of the 1st two rounds Michael Vargas. He wasn’t a happy man though as on the final part of the decent he dropped from 8th at the time to 13th after missing a turning that wasn’t marshalled.  He wasn’t alone as a battling group he was in all missed it and some runners further down the order had issues as well. Still 2 wins and a second is a strong start to the championship.

3rd home was Colin Tranter in 44th and a time of 22.32.  Harriers men came in quite close at this point with Daniel Marquina 47th, Rob Groves 50th and Jonathan Spain 51st all within 30 seconds of Colin.

Leading harriers lady home in 76th with a time of 24.31 was Nichola Moreland.  That’s her 2nd win in a row giving her a strong start to the season.

2nd home only 13 seconds behind was Rebecca Gray “Great fun, tried to sneak up on Nichola on the final stretch but she spotted me and pulled out a killer finish”.  Nichola replied “I’m glad I turned or you would definitely had me”.

Less than a minute further back was Robin Culshaw in a time of 25.20.

Other comments –

Jo Rhodes -“I loved it, faster on the up but might have overcooked it slightly whoops!  I’ve lost a bit of confidence on the downhill and it was slippy but still one of my favourite local races and think I was marginally quicker than last year”.

Richard Edwards – “Brutal short run.  I walked early and often on the way up.  The steps are bloody steep and short legs aren’t great on them.  The worst part is starting to run again at the top.  I was very careful on the way down but all in all it was fun in some weird way”.

Eleanor Colman – “Love my 1st Chevin Fell race.  Really tough but distance made it doable.  Glad I chickened out of Pen-Y-Ghent Saturday now as my calves were killing on the final bit of climb before the rocky bit”.
