There were 59 HPH women and 60 HPH men out parkrunning across 36 venues this week. Seventeen Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst them two new venues were added to the HPH list. These were Darndale in Dublin by Caroline Sanders and Amsterdamse Bos in the Netherlands by Jessica Wanless. Darndale Park is on Dublin’s Northside. The park has a playground, soccer pitches and a pond. The pond provides freshwater habitats and wetlands for wildlife and is also a great spot for fresh water fishing. The Amsterdamse Bos is a vast man-made forest with a canal and a goat farm. It came into being during the Depression in the 1930s. Amsterdam struggled with high unemployment – 55,000 citizens were unemployed at the time – and the construction of a city park provided a work relief programme. Between 1934 and 1940 the forestation project gave work to more than 20,000 unemployed people. Using no other technical means than wheelbarrows and metal dump carts on rails, the labourers created a forest from scratch, using shovels as their main equipment. Spanning an impressive 1,000 hectares, at three times the size of New York’s Central Park the Amsterdamse Bos is among the largest city parks in Europe. It is a polder forest that lies in a rare clay soil type. Its diverse landscape of wet and dry patches, wooded areas, grassland, reed land and open water provides a unique habitat for many flora and fauna species, including rabbits, squirrels, frogs, salamanders, woodpeckers, grazing Scottish Highlander cows and marsh harriers. At the centre of the Amsterdamse Bos is a biodynamic goat farm and products including a famous goat milk ice-cream are for sale.
There were two first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Rebecca Gray in 21:05 at Woodhouse Moor and Amy Ramsden-Young in 20:43 at Harlow. There were five PBs. These were by Steve Worthington with 21:37 at Woodhouse Moor; Tom Elcock with 23:46 at Wakefield Thornes; Poppy Forwood with 37:01 at Bradford; Abdu Ahmed with 19:34 at Roberts Park; and Andrew Nicholls with 24:07 at Foro Italico, Palermo, Italy.
Top female Age Grade% was 72.17% by Jane Prust at Darlington South Park and top male Age Grade% was 70.02% by Chris Jones at South Shields.
