There were 61 HPH women and 65 HPH men out parkrunning across 47 venues this week.

Forty-three Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Two of these were new to the HPH list. These were Carlow Town in Ireland by Chris Worfolk and Cieszyn in Poland by Tom Elcock.

The Carlow Town parkrun course is an out and back on the Barrow Track finishing with a lap of the Carlow Town Park. The Barrow Track is a path alongside the River Barrow that was originally used for horses to pull boats. Carlow Town Park was completed in June 2003. The park reimagines the open space at the heart of the Town. The water level in the River Barrow fluctuates over the seasons and part of the brief for the design of the new park was a series of positive interventions which would allow for the seasonal flooding of the area. In particular, the lower section of the site is liable to flooding in the wintertime as the level of water in the river swells and overflows. The implemented design allows for power washing of the pavement surfaces following flooding.

Cieszyn is in southern Poland on the east bank of the Olza River which forms the border with the Czech Republic. In 1920 Cieszyn Silesia was divided between the two newly created states of Poland and Czechoslovakia, with the smaller western suburbs of Cieszyn becoming part of Czechoslovakia as a new town called Český Těšín. The larger part of the town joined Poland as Cieszyn. After Poland and the Czech Republic joined the European Union and its passport-free Schengen zone, border controls were abolished and residents of both the Polish and Czech part could move freely across the border. The parkrun course takes advantage of this free movement. The Cieszyn parkrun straddles the Olza river. Starting in Poland, you run alongside the river and over a rather rickety wooden bridge, to the newly constructed “Sports bridge” half way over the bridge you enter the Czech Republic, where you then run alongside the opposite river bank to a touch post and then back on yourself to Sikora park, past a restaurant, before going back across the bridge into Poland (and no, you don’t need your passport). Once back on Polish soil, you turn down a gravel path, through a wooded area to a loop around a picnic site. Then it’s follow the path back again to finish where you started.

There was one first finishing Hyde Park Harrier. This was Jonathan Coade in a PB time of 18:16 at Pontefract. There were nine other PBs. These were by Aisling Davis with 23:05 and Dan Lee with 49:06 at Woodhouse Moor; Sam Dooley with 24:58 at Rothwell; Caitlin Crockford with 26:39 at Roundhay; Chloe Brooks with 23:09 at Fountains Abbey; Andrew Bassett with 22:30 at Druridge Bay; Ian Martinson with 22:00 at Penrose; Gregor Lawson with 21:18 at Loch Leven; and Alison Hargreaves with 25:44 at Potternewton.

Richard Cartwright joined the parkrun 50 club with his run at Pontefract. Helen Noyes joined the parkrun 250 club with her run at Woodhouse Moor.

Top female Age Grade% was 71.68% by Jane Prust at Huddersfield and top male Age Grade% was 74.85% by Ian Martinson at Penrose.
