There were 64 HPH women and 61 HPH men out parkrunning across 60 venues worldwide this week.
Twenty-four Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Two of these courses were new to the HPH list. These were Merthyr by Sam Dooley and Morrissey Park in Champaign, Illinois, USA by Tami Bond.
The Merthyr parkrun course is undulating on tarmac paths. It is one long lap followed by one short lap and it starts at the rear of Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre in Merthyr Leisure Village – “The premier location for recreation in the South Wales Valleys”.
Morrissey Park in Champaign, Illinois is one of sixty parks within the city. It has an area of 19 acres and contains a small playground; soccer pitch; benches; grills; tennis/pickleball courts, and the “Shield of Chichen Itza” sculpture. Pickleball is a racket sport in which two players (singles) or four players (doubles) use a smooth-faced paddle to hit a perforated, hollow plastic ball over a 34-inch-high net. It was invented in 1965 as a children’s backyard game. For three years in a row, 2021, 2022, and 2023, the sport was named the fastest-growing sport in the United States by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association. The parkrun course is 4.5 loops on a paved pedestrian path through the park.
There were four first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Clare Slorach in 21:42 at Middleton Woods; Vicky Houghton in 25:08 at Cotsford Fileds; and Thomas Moulding in 17:23 and Emily Martinson in 22:01 at Shingashigawa Ukima, Tokyo, Japan. There were eleven PBs. These were by Euan Douglas with 18:42, Andrew Black with 19:05 and Andrea Sendula with 28:26 at Wodhouse Moor; Lydia Williams with 34:30 at Arrow Valley; Caroline Young with 25:03 at Roundhay; Alexandra Natalie Smith with 25:19 at Crane; Ed Shakespeare with 20:27 and Liam Edwards with 31:43 at Armley; Sarah Roberts with 24:21 at Fletcher Moss; Alice Houldcroft with 31:56 at Queen’s; and Matilda Rhodes with 28:54 at Chevin Forest.
Amber Edwards joined the parkrun 250 club with her run at Nansenparken in Norway.
Top female Age Grade% was 71.96% by Clare Slorach at Heaton and top male Age Grade% was 76.00% by Ian Martinson at Market Rasen Racecourse.
