The number of Hyde Park Harriers at parkruns this week was back to impressive levels with 69 HPH women and 71 HPH men out parkrunning across 50 venues.
Forty Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course and four of these were new to the HPH list. These were Teignmouth Promenade by Richard Neal; West Links in Arbroath by Emma Amor; Fulwell Quarry in Sunderland by Andrew Bassett; and Tsurumi Ryokuchi in Osaka, Japan by Anna Stocks and Adam Sumnall.
Teignmouth Promenade parkrun course in Devon is three laps of the promenade. It is fairly flat and paved. The course is run between the Yacht Club and the lighthouse by the point car park. This course is very picturesque and runners experience the beautiful coast line as they run. During the 17th century it is possible that smuggling was Teignmouth’s most significant trade. From the 1800s onwards, the town grew rapidly in size from a fishing port associated with the Newfoundland cod industry to a fashionable resort of some note. There was further expansion after the opening of the South Devon Railway in 1846. Today, its port still operates and the town remains a popular seaside and day-trip holiday location.
West Links parkrun course in Arbroath is another out and back course along the coast. It is on the Angus Coastal Path within West Links Park and Elliot Links Nature Reserve. It is mostly on tarmac with some hard packed gravel. Elliot Links is a Site of Special Scientific Interest – designated for its sand dunes.
Fulwell Quarry parkrun course is two laps on an undulating multi terrain trail around the perimeter of fields adjacent to the Fulwell Quarry Nature Reserve. Fulwell Quarry is known locally as Witherwack Quarry. The nature reserve is of national importance due its rare Magnesian Limestone geology. The wildflower meadows and grasslands are the favourable habitats for many butterflies, such as the Large Skipper, the Small Skipper and the Dingy Skipper. Plants include wild strawberry and yellow-wort. Looking to the north and east, there are good views of the Cleadon Hills and the North Sea coast.
Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park in Osaka covers 300 square acres and is home to diverse animal and plant life. It has desert flora, Himalayan blossoms, a traditional tea house and vibrant cherry blossoms. It also has a Dutch windmill that is particularly impressive in spring surrounded by tulips. The park came into being during the 1990 International Flower and Greenery Exhibition, an event that drew over 20 million visitors. Afterward, the site was memorialized as a park and is designed so that it has flowers bursting into bloom during every season. Even in winter, the park is kaleidoscopic. With a large lawn; spaces for barbecues and camping; and a gigantic lake, it is perfect for lounging and a great place to escape the crowds of the nearby city.
There was one first finishing Hyde Park Harrier. This was Anna Stocks in 21:04 at Tsurumi Ryokuchi. There were fifteen PBs. These were by Jack Clarke with 20:56 and Megan Foster with 24:22 at Woodhouse Moor; Jonathan Coade with 18:05, Joe Lawley with 21:19, Alys with 24:32, Sam Dooley with 25:20, Sarah Jewers with 25:23 and Richard Edwards with 25:40 at Rothwell; Ian Martinson with 21:50 at Eden Project; Daniel Ellis with 25:16 at Roundhay; Alex Greenwood with 22:21 at Fell Foot; Poppy Forwood with 31:31 at Armley; Clare Maxwell with 29:30 at Myrtle; Rebecca Goody with 53:32 at Conyngham Hall; and Matt Kasher with 18:44 at Coombs in Australia.
Top female Age Grade% was 71.43% by Jane Prust at Rothwell and top male Age Grade% was 75.42% by Ian Martinson at Eden Project.
