With the stormy weather sweeping across the country there were a few late cancellations but there were still 41 HPH Women and 42 HPH Men out parkrunning across 26 different venues this week. The Hyde Park Harriers are really good at finding interesting new venues and this week was no exception with Trelai Park in Cardiff being added by Sam Dooley and Edgbaston Reservoir by Greg Judges. Trelai Park used to contain Ely Racecourse which was one of the most important horse racing courses in Wales – hosting the Welsh Grand National until the late 1930s. After the Second World War the rececourse site was redeveloped for recreational and sporting use and it also held international events such as sheep dog trials and clay pigeon shooting. The park is also the site of a Roman Villa – which was excavated by Sir Mortimer Wheeler in 1922. The site of the villa is still visible as an unmown area in the middle of the park, although the excavations have been covered over. Edgbaston Reservoir and its octagonal gatehouse were designed and built in 1827 by Thomas Telford. The reservoir is used as a top up for the Birmingham canal system. When it opened it was the largest expanse of water in Birmingham. It is also a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation supporting a variety of birds, in addition to newts and bats.
There was one first finishing Hyde Park Harrier – the ever speedy Amy Ramsden-Young in 19:08 at Woodhouse Moor. There were five PBs. These were by Gregor Lawson in 20:51, Felicity Burton in 21:50 and Jane Prust in 26:48 at Woodhouse Moor; Richard Edwards in 29:50 at Bradford; and Rebecca Thorley in 33:13 at Potternewton.
Greg Judges joined the new parkrun 25 club with his run at Edgbaston Reservoir and Mark Hadrill joined the parkrun 250 club with his run at Woodhouse Moor.
Top female Age Grade% was 77.70% by Amy Ramsden-Young at Woodhouse Moor and top male Age Grade% was 72.90% by Chris Jones with his bionic knee at Heslington.
