parkrunday 1st August 2026
There were 47 HPH women and 71 HPH men out parkrunning across 51 venues worldwide this week.
Fifty one Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Four of these were new to the HPH list. These were Kingsway Park in Greater Manchester by Vicky Houghton and Robert Butler; Donauradweg in Austria by Lucas Johnstone and Pablo de Pablo Carrion; Greendale Farm Shop in Exeter by Manesha Chauhan; and Sunnyvale Bay Trail in California by Tami Bond.
Kingsway Park is in the town of Urmston, five miles south west of Manchester City centre. The park a well-established outdoor space, that serves families in Manchester seeking somewhere for daily walks, picnics, and relaxation. It is best known for its vital role during World War II as an anti-aircraft gun battery site defending the nearby Trafford Park industrial estate. Its primary job was to protect the strategic Metropolitan-Vickers factory and Trafford Park production lines, which manufactured parts for the legendary Lancaster bomber. The battery operated with searchlights and heavy guns to deter and target enemy bombers flying toward Manchester. The military site closed in 1945 with the end of the war, and original guns and concrete storage bunkers were subsequently cleared. The parkrun course is three clockwise laps, starting and finishing by the northwest corner of the leisure centre car park. The course is predominately on grass with two short sections of tarmac path per lap.
Donauradweg parkrun is in the Austrian city of Linz. The city straddles the Danube River midway between Salzburg and Vienna. Baroque buildings, including Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) and the old cathedral or Alter Dom, ring Hauptplatz, the old town’s main square. The riverside Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz has a major modern art collection. Across the river, the striking Ars Electronica Center focuses on society, technology and life in the future. Adolf Hitler considered Linz, Austria, his true hometown. He spent his formative adolescent years there from 1898 to 1907, attended secondary school at the local Realschule, met his close friend August Kubizek, and later envisioned grand plans to transform Linz into a major cultural capital of the Third Reich. The parkrun course is a flat out and back along an asphalted cycle path on the northern bank of the River Danube.
The multi award-winning Greendale Farm Shop is located just outside Exeter. The shop sells meat from their own farm and fresh fish from their boats. The shelves are additionally packed with delicious local produce – from cheese and clotted cream to fresh fruit and veg, handmade sausages, newly-baked bread and Devon-brewed cider. Local produce also features on the menus at Greendale Kitchen (their cafe/restaurant), at their fish & chip takeaway and at Oscar’s Drive-Thru – named after Oscar the Ostrich, one of their Farm Trail’s most popular residents. The free Family Farm Trail is set in several acres of farmland and follows a level path taking you past friendly animals, from Oscar the ostrich and the Kunekune pigs to fluffy alpacas, shaggy Highland cattle and a resident wallaby. The parkrun course starts at the farm shop, completes a short 1km loop before heading down to the fishing lake and alongside a beautiful stream. The course loops back to finish next to Oscar’s Cafe.
Sunnyvale is a city in the Santa Clara Valley in California. As one of the major cities that make up California’s high-tech area known as Silicon Valley, Sunnyvale is the birthplace of the video game industry having the former location of Atari’s headquarters. Many technology companies are headquartered in Sunnyvale and many more operate there, including several aerospace/defence companies. The Sunnyvale Bay Trail is part of the bigger San Francisco Bay Trail that will eventually encompass 400 miles around the Bay Area. The parkrun course is one long out and back and then a second shorter out and back along the Sunnyvale Bay Trail. The joint civil-military Moffett Field airport is at the western end of the course making it a good site for plane spotters. Large transport planes like the C-5 Galaxy and C-130 Hercules frequently fly in and out. Federal or dignitary flights (such as Air Force Two) periodically land. Occasional fighter jets (such as F-35s) do low approaches. Private aircraft for Google executives are housed there.
There were two first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Nick Shakhlevich in 18:02 at Heslington and Adam Lomas in a PB time of 17:52 at Bramhall. There were thirteen other PBs. These were by Lara Chapman with 30:13 and Nicola Harold with 40:20 at Conyngham Hall; Reuben Keating with 17:44, Tobias Adkins with 18:36, Matthew Batten with 21:11 and Gordon Crawford with 22:55 at Armley; Daniel Allison with 24:10 at Roundhay; Harry Webster with 21:58 and William Dow with 25:43 at Chevin Forest; Grace Hunter with 39:20 at Lancing Beach Green; Edward Hale with 20:42 at Horton Park; Nigel Wallis with 20:17 at Bishan in Singapore; and Ellie Shipp with 30:03 at Gunnersbury.
