parkrundays 18th and 20th May 2023

There were 54 HPH women and 64 HPH men out parkrunning across 45 venues this week. The statistics are slightly different this week because in Finland there were parkruns on Helai Torstai (Ascension Day) – 18th May as well as parkrunday and two Hyde Park Harriers made the trip over to bag that extra parkrun. Thirty-three Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst them three new courses were added to the HPH list. These were Tokoinranta in Finland by Liz Jones and Chris Jones; Tapijn in the Netherlands by Tom Roper; and Thames Path in Woolwich by Monika Pugeviciute. Tokoinranta parkrun is in central Helsinki and is an out-and-back course around the shores of Töölönlahti Bay. It passes the impressive Finlandia Hall designed by architect Alvar Aaltol. Aalto’s basic view was that architecture should create a frame for human beings. In the Finlandia Hall, the focus is not on extraordinary forms or ostentatious interior, but rather on the audience and on the performers. According to Aalto, the audience at the Finlandia Hall need not dress up like people used to in the opera house foyers and gilded concert halls of the old days. What people wear should be as genuine and natural as the environment in the building. Tapijn parkrun is three laps around the buildings of Maastrict University, with the start and finish close to the Brasserie Tapijn restaurant. Thames Path parkrun in Woolwich is the latest London parkrun. It goes along a section of the Thames Path between Woolwich Arsenal Heritage site and Gallions Reach Park. In Gallions Reach Park the course goes in a spiral to the turnaround point at the top of a mound. It finishes at Woolwich Arsenal Pier – which is a stopping point for Thames Clipper service RB1 into Canary Wharf, London Bridge and Barking Riverside (Thames Barrier permitting).

There were two first finishing Hyde Park Harriers this week. These were Amy Ramsden-Young in 21:17 at North Yorkshire Water Park and Frazer Carr in 16:54 at Stretford. There were eleven PBs. These were by Josh Mitchell with 18:34 at Wakefield Thornes; Rupert Jordan with 16:52 at Town Moor; Thomas Moulding with 17:36 at Preston; Vicky Houghton with 22:34 at York; Karly Stringer with 26:55 and Hannah Sutton with 27:56 at Roundhay; Alexander Perkin with 21:57 at Redcar; Tom Elcock with 23:36 and Clare Evans with 23:46 at Middleton Woods; Stephen Prust with 36:30 at Chevin Forest; and Jordan Clifford with 21:38 at Roberts Park.

Top female Age Grade% was 70.01% by Amy Ramsden-Young at North Yorkshire Water Park and top male Age Grade% was 80.34% by Rupert Jordan at Town Moor.
