There were 59 HPH women and 66 HPH men out parkrunning across 46 venues worldwide this week.
Sixteen Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Two of these courses were new to the HPH list. These were Battersea by Eleanor Williams and Cockermouth Greenway by Joe Lawley.
Battersea park in London is steeped in history. Prior to becoming a park it was known as Battersea Fields and was where the Duke of Wellington and the Earl of Winchilsea had a duel to settle a matter of honour in 1829. The park hosted the first exhibition football game played under the rules of the recently formed Football Association on 9 January 1864. From the mid 1860s, the park was home to the leading amateur football team Wanderers F.C., winners of the first FA Cup, in 1872. In 1951 the northern parts of the park were transformed into the “Pleasure Gardens” as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations. Popular attractions included the Battersea Funfair, with roller coasters, swings and roundabouts; the Guinness Clock, designed by Jan Le Witt and George Him; and the Far Tottering and Oyster Creek Branch Railway. In 1978 Battersea Park hosted a big punk rock concert featuring The Stranglers who booked some strippers to up the show’s visual aspect. Eventually the police were called and took down all of the young ladies’ particulars. The park is currently home to a small children’s zoo, a boating lake, a bandstand, and all-weather outdoor sporting facilities including tennis courts, football pitches, and a running track – used for training by the UK’s most successful athletics club Belgrave Harriers. The parkrun course is a flat two laps anti-clockwise entirely on tarmac paths around the south loop of the park.
Cockermouth Greenway parkrun course is three out and back laps on tarmac on the Cockermouth Greenway footpath that runs along an old railway line. The one mile long traffic free footpath has pieces of metal art and local historical information at points along its length.
There were two first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Thomas Moulding in 16:46 on his first time at York and Clare Slorach in 22:20 at Potternewton. There were ten PBs. These were by Christopher Kemp with 19:19, Craig Morland with 19:28, Ed Shakespeare with 22:56 and Alice Houldcroft with 29:53 at Woodhouse Moor; Cara Gates with 23:44 at Ashton Court; Pablo Tenorio Villegas with 18:50 at York; Frazer Carr with 18:12 at Roundhay; Nick Shakhlevich with 18:04 at Selby; Mike Gallagher with 18:47 at Roberts Park; and Chris Worfolk with 24:03 at Marlay in Ireland.
Paul Milligan and Andrew Black joined the parkrun 100 club and Paul Ramsden joined the parkrun 250 club with their runs at Woodhouse Moor.
Top female Age Grade% was 77.28% by Coralie Bell at Storeys Field and top male Age Grade% was 77.34% by Thomas Moulding at York.
