parkrunday 21st January 2023

Numbers were down a little bit this week with 59 HPH Women and 53 HPH Men out parkrunning across 31 different venues. Undoubteldy this was down to the continuing cold weather with icy conditions that caused a fair number of local parkruns to be cancelled. Seventeen Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and three new courses were added to the HPH list – these were Auldcathie District by Jane and Stephen Prust; Great Lines in Gillingham by Pavels Sidlovskis; and Meijō Kōen in Nagoya, Japan by Vikki Hawkins. Auldcathie District Park is in the village of Winchburgh, ten miles to the west of Edinburgh. Until recently it was a landfill site, but has now been redeveloped as an 85 acre park with 31,000 trees. In 2022 the reclamation project was recognised as the UK’s Best Sustainable Urban Regeneration Scheme at the Environment Analyst’s 18th annual Brownfield Awards Ceremony. Great Lines is in the Heritage Park that is on the site of The Lines. These are a linear defence fortification with projecting bastions allowing covering fire to be directed into the ditches flanking them. They were originally built during Napoleonic times and were massively re-fortified during World War II, with the Lines ditch acting as an anti-tank barrier, as part of the Medway war defences. The Lines are mentioned in Charles Dickens’ novel “Pickwick Papers” – “A grand review was to take place upon the Lines. The manoeuvres of half a dozen regiments were to be inspected by the eagle eye of the commander-in-chief; temporary fortifications had been erected, the citadel was to be attacked and taken, and a mine was to be sprung.” Meijō Kōen is a public park surrounding Nagoya Castle. The park is located on the site of the former Ofuke Garden that was a large garden centering on a pond that was left over from the low marshland that existed on the north side of the castle when Nagoya Castle was built. The pond has a number of small islands and the area was cultivated as a pretty Japanese garden. The area was converted into a public park in 1931.

There were two first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Vicky Houghton in 26:01 at Temple Newsam and Rob Riley in 18:26 at Ambleside, Vancouver, Canada. There were seven PBs. These were by Daniel Laycock with 24:21 at Woodhouse Moor; Alice Young with 24:27 at Hackney Marshes; Danni Bryant with 26:09 and Karly Stringer with 28:00 at Roundhay; Tom Elcock with 22:04 at Fountains Abbey; Matt Barton with 22:16 at Bramley; and William Watkins with 21:43 at Dunedin.

Jack Holland joined the parkrun 25 club with his run at Woodhouse Moor.

Top female Age Grade% was 72.92% by Jane Prust at Auldcathie District and top male Age Grade% was 71.26% by Colin Tranter at Woodhouse Moor.

Here are the details of this week’s parkrunning Hyde Park Harriers.
