parkrunday 22nd August 2026

There were 57 HPH women and 67 HPH men out parkrunning across 46 venues worldwide this week.

Twenty-five Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Two of these were new to the HPH list. These were Gibraltar Botanic Gardens by Sam Dooley and Green Park in Reading by Daniel Roberts.

The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens were commissioned in 1816 by the British Governor of Gibraltar General George Don. It was his intention that the soldiers stationed in the fortress would have a pleasant recreational area to enjoy when off duty, and so inhabitants could enjoy the air protected from the extreme heat of the sun. The gardens were resurrected in 1991 by an external company when it was realised that since the 1970s they had fallen into a poor state. Three years later the gardens had the addition of a zoo: the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park. In 2001 a bronze sculpture of James Joyce’s Molly Bloom was installed in the gardens. This running figure was commissioned from Jon Searle to celebrate the bicentenary of the Gibraltar Chronicle in 2001. The James Joyce heroine from Ulysses has strong Gibraltar connections. She is Gibraltarian and in her Alameda Gardens soliloquy mentions, amongst many other local items, ‘the chronicle’. Her husband Leopold has a book yet to be returned to the Garrison Library. The parkrun course is out and back three times through trees and planted gardens on wide tarmac paths, with gentle slopes and one hill with a total elevation gain of around 100m.

Green Park is a recently developed suburban neighbourhood of Reading. Initially conceived as a business park, it now also encompasses a residential development of more than 1,300 new homes, including apartment blocks and “New-England” style houses. There are also shops, restaurants, a school and a new railway station. The Select Car Leasing Stadium, home of Reading Football Club, adjoins Green Park to the east. The parkrun course is one and a half laps on a mixture of hoggin trail and pavement, around picturesque lakes and quiet business park lanes. The route offers many glimpses of other participants across the water. The start and finish are two minutes walk apart, on opposite sides of a lake. If like me you hadn’t come across “hoggin trails”, then Wikipedia provides the answer. A hoggin trail is a low-maintenance, firm footpath made from a natural mix of gravel, sand, and clay that binds tightly together when compacted. It is a smooth, buff or golden-brown surface commonly found in parks, heritage properties, and National Trust gardens. It is semi-permeable to reduce puddles, self-binding so it does not need regular raking, and cheaper or more natural-looking than tarmac or concrete.

There were three first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Clare Slorach in 21:06 at North Walsham; Rebecca Gray in 23:06 at Pontefract; and Lucy McKerrell in 20:12 at Sharpham Road Playing Fields. There were ten PBs. These were by Kevin Longmate with 22:21 at Middleton Woods; Jack Rose with 28:20 and Anna Moger with 30:36 at York Community Woodland; Charlie Jackett with 21:52 at Rickmansworth; Nick Shakhlevich with 18:13 at Harrogate; Joe Lawley with 26:30 and Sarah Jewers with 29:21 at Meadowhill; Muyang Zhang with 29:38 at Worsley Woods; Jennifer Benett with 26:02 at Ury Riverside and Lara Chapman with 29:30 at Nostell.

Erin Shepherd joined the parkrun 50 club with her run at Woodhouse Moor and Chris Lodge joined the parkrun 100 club with his run at Roundhay.

Top female Age Grade% was 73.27% by Lucy McKerell at Sharpham Road Playing Fields and top male Age Grade% was 75.22% by Mike Gallagher at Woodhouse Moor.

Here are the details of this week’s parkrunning Hyde Park Harriers.
