parkrunday 22nd July 2023

The UK parkrun weather fairies must be on holiday at the moment because there was non-stop rain this weekend. However it didn’t put off the 50 HPH women and 53 HPH men out parkrunning across 44 venues this week.

Twenty-five Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst them three new courses were added to the HPH list. These were Peacehaven between Brighton and Eastbourne on the South Coast by Andrew Nicholls; Thornham Walks in Suffolk by Rob Riley; and the inaugural Ashington Community Woodland parkrun in Northumberland by Andrew Bassett.

Peacehaven parkrun takes place in Centenary Park (The Big Park) which was officially opened on 15th April 2015 by HRH The Duke of Gloucester. It is in 11 acres of green space within the South Downs National Park. The park has two “magical” playgrounds. The toddler playground with its giant wood carved dragon, a peek a boo wall and the adventure playground for older children boasting a magnificent acorn tower and the biggest swing you’ve ever seen! The Park also has the Zero Degrees state-of-the-art Skatepark which is suitable for scooters, bikes, or traditional skaters – children from 5-50 have great fun here. Features include a skateable sundial, deep bowls and ramps.

Thornham Walks are part of the Thornham Estate in the village of Thornham Magna. The Walks include a Victorian Folly in the form of a gothic summerhouse that was restored in 2000; a special woodland area – the Memory Wood – where people can remember loved ones by planting a tree; the butterfly ride in an area that is managed to benefit the butterflies’ life cycle, and hopefully to increase their numbers. Some of the species you may spot are the meadow brown, peacock, small tortoiseshell, gatekeeper, speckled wood, comma, skipper and purple hairstreak; a nuttery – to supply sticks, hurdles, barrel hoops and nuts (the squirrels in my garden think that would be a welcome addition there); and a walled garden that has also been recently restored. The parkrun course is a two-lap mixed terrain course with sections which are narrow and include timber bridge crossings, and narrow turns on uneven ground, meaning participants will be in single file.

Ashington Community Woodland is a large woodland planting scheme which has been used to reclaim the former Ashington Colliery site and associated post industrial land. With its diverse range of habitats, it is home to a variety of wildlife and plants. There are plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, including birds, deer, and foxes. The woodland is also home to a variety of trees, including oak, ash and beech. Ashington is renowned for producing a number of sporting legends including footballers Jack and Bobby Charlton and Jackie Milburn and cricketers Ben and Steve Harmison and Mark Wood. It is also famous for “The Pitmen Painters” a group of artists composed largely of mine workers who became celebrated in the British art world of the 1930s and 1940s.

There were no first finishing Hyde Park Harriers this week but there were eight PBs. These were by Jonathan Churchman with 23:55; Rebecca Dawson with 27:43 and Stephen Prust with 34:05 at Woodhouse Moor; Jordan Clifford with 21:32 at Bradford; Hannah Sutton with 27:34 at Roundhay – knocking 20s off last week’s PB there; Richard Neal with 26:24 at Exmouth; and Alys Griffiths with 25:52 and Sarah Jewers with 28:18 at Potternewton.

There were no new parkrun club members this week, but Poppy Forwood made it 200 with her run at Narin Beach in Ireland and Claudia Bauer reached 300 with her run at Woodhouse Moor.

Top female Age Grade% was 73.28% by Helen Williams at Harrogate and top male Age Grade% was 71.36% by Frazer Carr at Rothwell.

Here are the details of this week’s parkrunning Hyde Park Harriers.
