There were 49 HPH Women and 50 HPH Men out parkrunning across 32 different venues this week. Twenty Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new parkrun course and amongst these two new courses were added to the current HPH list. These were Dunstable Downs by George Sullivan and Barry Curtis in Auckland, New Zealand by Tom Elcock continuing his antipodean tour. Dunstable Downs is a National Trust estate and is within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is the highest point in Bedfordshire and the wind-swept ridge provides ideal conditions for kite flying. On calmer days it’s the ideal site to enjoy the view and a picnic. It is also adjacent to Whipsnade Zoo. Barry Curtis park in Auckland is named after Sir Barry Curtis a local politician who served as mayor of Manukau City from 1983 until 2007. At 230 acres, the park is one of New Zealand’s largest urban parks. Auckland is renowned for producing two of the best middle distance runners in the world in the 1960s and 70s, namely Peter Snell and John Walker. Both followed training plans developed by another Auckland resident – Arthur Lydiard one of the outstanding athletics coaches of all time. A section of the parkrun course is named John Walker Promenade. As well as being steeped in running history, Barry Curtis parkrun has also become the new home parkrun for a couple of former Woodhouse Moor regulars who now live out there – Shamiso Mawer (Shami Sisimayi before her recent marriage) and guinness drinking, navigationally challenged, parkrun legend Steve Darby.
There were three first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. There was a clean sweep at Bramley where Michael Vargas was first finishing male in 18:39 and Amy Ramsden-Young was first finishing female in a PB time of 21:09. Rebecca Gray was first finisher in 21:56 on her first visit to Cusworth Hall. There were four other PBs. These were by Indi Lacey with 23:29 at Woodhouse Moor; Hannah Sutton with 28:59 at Roundhay; Alice Young with 24:39 at Mile End; and Helen Beddow with 32:07 at Chevin Forest.
Top female Age Grade% was 70.45% by Amy Ramsden-Young at Bramley and top male Age Grade% was 75.95% by Gordon Crawford at Woodhouse Moor.
