parkrunday 23rd September 2023

There were 46 HPH women and 57 HPH men out parkrunning across 34 venues this week.

Fourteen Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course and amongst them four new courses were added to the HPH list. These were Dover Waterfront by Claire Hougham; Silloth Promenade in Cumbria by Liz and Chris Jones; Clarence in Bury by Eleanor Williams; and Anacostia in Washington DC, USA by Tami Bond.

Dover Waterfront parkrun course goes along Dover beach and includes an out and back section to the end of Dover’s new Marina Pier which opened in 2019 as part of the £250 million Western Docks Revival Scheme. Set against the iconic backdrop of the famous White Cliffs and overlooked by Dover’s magnificent castle, the award-winning Dover Marina is the most convenient location for cross-Channel sailing being just 20 miles from France.

Silloth is a small port town on the Cumberland coast and is an example of a Victorian seaside resort. Following the construction of a railway line from Carlisle in the 1860s the town flourished as a destination for day trippers. The town reached the peak of its popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nowadays tourism is the major contributor to the economy in Silloth, with dozens of large and small static and touring caravan parks located within a 10 miles radius of the town centre. A popular event in Silloth is the annual Music and Beer Festival which this year was held between Thursday 7th and Sunday 10th September, so just missed it by two weeks.

Clarence Park in Bury held its inaugural parkrun this week. It is the largest urban park in the borough, and was opened to the public in 1888. The park’s facilities include a bandstand, tennis courts, a children’s play area, a skate park, bowling green, a football pitch and a café. A lido offers angling opportunities and is home to a model boat club. Originally a reservoir, the lido was opened to the public in 1963.

Anacostia parkrun course in Washington DC is fast and flat along the asphalt Anacostia Riverwalk Trail on the southern bank of the Anacostia River.

There were no first finishing Hyde Park Harriers this week, but there were 14 PBs. These were by Thomas Moulding with 17:06; Andrew Black with 19:18; Vicente Ponsoda with 19:52; 23:06; Cara Gates with 22:06; and Alison Hargreaves with 23:06 at Woodhouse Moor; Alexander Perkin with 21:31 at Bradford; Abigail Prudhoe with 32:40 at Pontefract; Conor Gould with 29:23 at Whitley Bay; Emma Whitlow with 32:29 at Temple Newsam; Joe Lawley with 22:27 at Bramley; Jack Rose with 21:56 at New Earswick; Kate Pankhurst with 28:33 at Armley; Oliver Pryse with 23:30 at Walmer and Deal Seafront; and Daniel Waas with 22:55 at Doddington Hall. Thomas Moulding’s time puts him in sixth place of the HPH list at Woodhouse Moor behind Chris Mann (16:34); Adam Lomas (16:41); Rupert Jordan (16:46); Michael Vargas (16:54) and Philip Fisher (17:03).

Top female Age Grade% was 72.93% by Honor Baldry at Woodhouse Moor and top male Age Grade% was 78.55% by Rupert Jordan at Town Moor.
