parkrunday 25th June 2022 – Hyde Park Harriers

There were 52 HPH Women and 49 HPH Men out parkrunning across 40 different venues this week. Four new venues were added to the HPH list. These were Henstridge Airfield between Yeovil and Shaftesbury by Emma Amor; Ifield Mill Pond in Crawley by Anna Stocks and Adam Sumnall; Chilton Fields in Stowmarket by Robert Butler; and Elder Park in Glasgow by Romina Masood. Henstridge AIrfield is a former Royal Naval Air Station that is now home to both the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and the Yakovlevs aerobatic display team. The Yakovlevs are a world renowned six-aircraft formation and aerobatic display team flying authentic Soviet Yak 52 and Yak 50 aircraft (made in Romania and flown in the Ukraine). Elder Park in Glasgow was given to the people of Govan for “healthful recreation by music and amusement” by Isabella Elder in 1885, in memory of her husband, the shipbuilding magnate John Elder. Isabella Elder was an amazing woman and philanthropist. Within Elder Park she funded the building and stocking of Elder Free Library, which remains open there to the community to this day. She also provided the financial support needed for Queen Margaret College in Glasgow to offer courses in medicine to women with the first graduations occuring in 1894. She also set up a School for Domestic Economy where young women learned how to cook and perform other household tasks on a limited budget and provided the funds to build the Elder Cottage Hospital. There are statues of both Isabella and John Elder in the park.

There were four first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Cara Gates in 22:10 at Cleethorpes; Rupert Jordan in 17:44 at Bramley; Amy Ramsden-Young in a PB time of 19:31 at Armley; and Anna Stocks in 19:46 at Ifield Mill Pond. There were 11 other PBs. These were by Chris Harris with 21:44 and Jed Moore with 22:02 at Woodhouse Moor; Eleanor Parkhill with 33:25 at Pollok; Nicki Derrick with 26:32 at Rothwell; Frazer Carr with 23:02 at Roundhay; John Pratt with 19:59 and Sarah Underwood with 22:47 at Armley; Niall Flynn with 20:54 at Conyngham Hall; and Richard Edwards with 30:38, Stuart Harris with 31:37 and Jaz Bangerh with 40:51 at Roberts Park.

There was drama in the Brown household this week. It was like the custody battle in the Academy Award winning movie Kramer vs Kramer. The question was where would Winnie end up? ~~Meryl Streep~~ Debbie was determined to get a parkrun starting with a J and had chosen Jesmond Dene in Newcastle, but they don’t allow dogs there. ~~Dustin Hoffman~~ Steve then came to the rescue to make sure that Winnie got her barkrun by taking her to neaby dog-friendly Leazes.

Top female Age Grade% was 76.17% by Amy Ramsden-Young at Armley and top male Age Grade% was 75.85% by Rupert Jordan at Bramley.
