There were 47 HPH women and 50 HPH men out parkrunning across 39 venues this week. Twenty-four Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst them three new courses were added to the HPH list. These were Lydney by Claire Booth; Chuo koen in Japan by Vikki Hawkins; and Zandvlei in Cape Town, South Africa by Kay Jefferies and Trevor Raddings. Lydney parkrun in Gloucestershire is around Lydney Boating Lake, which despite the name is no longer used for boating as it is a coarse fishing venue which contains a good head of carp to 40lb, roach, bream, tench, eel, pike, chub, and perch. Chuo koen is the latest Japanese parkrun added to Vikki Hawkins’ list. It is in the city of Morioka and is the most northerly parkrun in Japan. A local attraction is the “Rock Breaking Cherry Tree” – a four hundred year old cherry tree growing out of a crack in a granite block that has been declared a National Treasure of Japan. Vikki was delighted to find another attraction in her travels in the area – the Pokémon train where everything inside the two car units – curtains, cushions, seats and carpet – is pika-fied. Zandvlei parkrun is on the shore of the Zandvlei Estuary Nature Reserve. The surrounding wetland is an important habitat for birds and has 166 species on its official list. It is also a vital habitat for amphibians and about 20 species of reptile such as the angulate tortoise, marsh terrapin and mole snake. Porcupines, grysbok, otters and mongoose can also occasionally be spotted.
There was one first finishing Hyde Park Harrier. This was Anna Stocks in 20:55 on her first visit to the red squirrel hotspot at the Nant y Pandy Nature Reserve on Anglesey in North Wales. There were six PBs. These were by Daisy Wales with 26:11 at Endcliffe; Ciara Crossan with 25:40 at Pontefract; Rob Riley with 19:33 at Colney Lane; Vick Houghton with 22:29 at Heslington; Chris Harris with 23:38 at Cliffe Castle; and Anna Moger with 29:36 at Potternewton.
Lizzie Coombes joined the parkrun 250 club with her run at Woodhouse Moor.
Top female Age Grade% was 72.78% by Jane Prust at Heslington and top male Age Grade% was 73.62% by Tom Thomas at York.
