parkrunday 26th August 2023

There were 60 HPH women and 61 HPH men out parkrunning across 47 venues this week.

Forty-two Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course and amongst them four new courses were added to the HPH list. These were Prospect Park in Reading by Richard Neal; The Great Field in Dorchester by Peter Hobson; Sharpham Estate in Totnes by Kate Solomon; and Shanganagh in the Dublin suburb of Shankill by Chris Worfolk.

Prospect Park is the largest and most popular park in Reading, and includes a large regency style house which has recently been restored and is now a Harvester Restaurant. The area surrounding the Mansion House has broad sweeps of short cut grass, with areas of meadow grassland. A pond lies to the south of the house and attracts an assortment of wildlife, while to the north there is a mature oak woodland and Wildlife Heritage Site. In the south-eastern corner of the park, the Reading Society of Model Engineers runs a miniature railway, which is open to the public on certain days. The park was named after its views over Reading.

The Great Field in Dorchester is a new park in the Poundbury area of Dorchester. Poundbury is an experimental urban extension on the western outskirts of Dorchester. The development is led by the Duchy of Cornwall, and had the keen endorsement of King Charles III when he was Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall. Its design is based on traditional architecture and New Urbanist philosophy. Poundbury has been highlighted for its pedestrian and public transport links and not being as ‘car-based’ as other developments across the country. In May 2022, the Prince of Wales formally opened a huge children’s play area in the Great Field. The park also contains a zip wire, outdoor gym equipment, an area with wildflowers and plenty of paths on which to enjoy a walk. The park is now under the care of Dorchester Town Council.

The Sharpham Estate parkrun course description says it is: “National Cycle Network 28 from Totnes towards Ashprington; turn around point is on the lower path leading to Sharpham House. There are spectacular views over the river, and distant vistas of Dartmoor. The narrow path is mainly tarmac with a short section of rough track, and it is very hilly in places. It is shared with cyclists, walkers, and dog owners.”

Shankill’s Shanganagh Park is the home of Shankill’s local Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) Club which promotes indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes including the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie (UNESCO lists camogie as an element of Intangible Cultural Heritage), and Gaelic football. The park has two full sized grass GAA fields as well as three 11 a side grass football pitches, a cricket pitch and a baseball field. The parkrun course description says it is very flat with some 90 degree turns.

There was one first finishing Hyde Park Harrier this week. This was Frazer Carr in his first visit to Darlington South Park in a time of 17:01. There were eight PBs. These were by Adam Lomas with 16:41 and Daniel Roberts with 23:13 at Woodhouse Moor; John Pratt with 18:58 at Roundhay; Grace Roberts with 29:24 at Queens, Belfast; Jack Rose with 22:07 at New Earswick; Nick Shakhlevich with 18:50 and Karly Stringer with 26:16 at Armley; and Rupert Jordan with 18:22 at Jesmond Dene.

Steve Worthington and Sophie Studholme joined the parkrun 50 club with their runs at Chevin Forest and Albert Melbourne respectively.

Top female Age Grade% was 65.58% by Lizzie Coombes at Queen’s Belfast and top male Age Grade% was 78.22% by Adam Lomas at Woodhouse Moor.

Here are the details of this week’s parkrunning Hyde Park Harriers.
