There were 57 HPH women and 73 HPH men out parkrunning across 49 venues this week.
Thirty-two Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst them two new courses were added to the HPH list. These were Itchen Valley Country in Southampton by Andy Judd, Liam Brown and Julie Robson; and Denton Dene in Newcastle by Andrew Bassett.
Itchen Valley Country Park is relatively new having been established in 1979 when over 350 acres of the site were acquired by Eastleigh Borough Council. It lies just over the River Itchen from Southampton Airport. The park has a number of walks and trails, including an off-road cycling track. A bridleway runs through the park and forms part of the parkrun course. The bridleway is closed for horses during parkrun.
Denton Dene is Newcastle’s latest parkrun course having started on 17th June 2023. Denton Dene itself is a steep wooded dene to the west of Newcastle city centre. It is a popular place for walking and getting away from the bustle of city life. It was designated as a site of local nature conservation importance in 1983 and a local nature reserve in 1991. Nature enthusiasts and walkers enjoy exploring the network of paths through the ancient woodland. It has ponds that are home to a population of smooth and palmate newts and there is an abundance of birds and wildlife that can be seen.
There were three first finishing Hyde Park Harriers this week. These were Michael Vargas in 17:52 at Bradford; Frazer Carr in 17:50 at Evesham; and Vicky Houghton in 22:12 at Potternewton. There were a baker’s dozen PBs. These were by Andrew Smallwood with 27:52 at Woodhouse Moor; Alison Hargreaves with 24:00 at Burnley; George Sullivan with 23:06 at Gedling; Jack Rose with 21:24 at Temple Newsam; Jordan Clifford with 21:26 at Roberts Park; Dan Waas with 25:17 at Yarborough Leisure Centre; David Grealy with 20:46 at Knocknacarra; and six at Potternewton – Nick Shakhlevich with 19:20, Vicky Houghton with 22:12, John Blatherwick with 22:38, Caroline Young with 22:54, Eleanor Williams with 25:28 and Kay Jefferies with 40:05.
Jonathan Spain joined the parkrun 100 club with his run at Woodhouse Moor.
Top female Age Grade% was 69.29% by Vicky Houghton at Potternewton and top male Age Grade% was 75.28% by Michael Vargas at Bradford.
