On a chiily morning in the UK the numbers of Hyde Park Harriers out parkrunning this week were down slightly with 43 HPH Women and 39 HPH Men across 30 venues. There were no new venues added to the HPH list, but there were a couple of special events attended by Hyde Park Harriers. Roundhay was celebrating its 500th and Sam Dooley, Alexander Perkin, Faye Stringer and Mohammed Aslam joined in the fun.
Over in Japan they were celebrating their 3rd parkrun birthday and Vikki Hawkins – a Hyde Park Harrier who had been at their first event was there again and she has wriiten a piece about her parkrun story in Japan. Here it is.
“Three years ago, a very nervous me set off for Tokyo on my first trip to Japan. I was living in Dubai at the time and had to travel to do parkrun. When I saw the inaugural Japan parkrun was during the school holidays, I made the decision to go. A 10 hour flight and a 4 day stay seems crazy even now, but I am so pleased I did it.”
“When I arrived at Futakotamagawa Station I immediately spotted other parkrunners and introduced myself then went with them to the park. I saw Tom Williams (he was in the same running club as me back in the UK) and as I had not seen him for many years, it was lovely to have a catch up. I met Paul Sinton-Hewitt for the first time and had a chat to Noel Thatcher, who I had met before at a special event at Woodhouse Moor many years before. It felt totally unreal to be there at an inaugural for an event let alone a completely new parkrun country.”
“The event itself was quite simply parkrun. The same community feel that I have experienced all over the world. Absolutely awesome.”
“That summer I went back to Japan for three weeks and did my 100th parkrun at Futakotamagawa.”
“Fast forward to 2022. I am actually living in Tokyo now and Futakotamagawa is my local parkrun. I totally fell in love with Japan during that very first visit and last year I got a job here.”
“The team are so incredibly friendly and helpful. My colleagues from work have started coming to parkrun too. Two of them walk and love it because they are doing 5k and having a good chat. I’ve made friends at parkrun and going for coffee after the event is so lovely.”
“I feel so lucky to have parkrun back in my life again. Each Saturday morning, I go to the park, see the parkrun flag and I am home.”
Meanwhile over in Poland another Hyde Park Harrier – Liz Jones – was completing her parkrun alphabet with a Z at Zamek w Malborku.
There weren’t any first finishing Hyde Park Harriers this week, but there were 10 PBs. These were by Ralph Kidner with 31:15 at Chevin Forest; Alison Pullan with 24:36 at Millhouses; Ben Hartley with his first sub 20 minute in a while – 19:58 – at hilly Potternewton; Cara Gates with 22:35, Sarah Underwood with 23:13, Richard Edwards with 24:45, Jo Rhodes with 25:16 and Heather Fulton with 30:57 at Roberts Park; Sam Dooley with 23:40 at Roundhay; and Abdu Ahmed with 21:31 at Woodhouse Moor – a whole minute off last week’s PB there.
Jane Prust joined the parkrun 50 club with her run at Glossop which was also this week’s top female Age Grade% of 68.81%. Top male Age Grade% was 76.69% by Gordon Crawford at Woodhouse Moor.
