parkrunday 2nd September 2023

There were 64 HPH women and 63 HPH men out parkrunning across 54 venues this week.

Thirty-seven Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course and amongst them four new courses were added to the HPH list. These were Wisbech by Clare Maxwell; Dodder Valley on the outskirts of Dublin in Ireland by Chris Worfolk; Margaret River near Bramley – no not that one – in Western Australia by Jack Rose; and Fort Ward near Seattle, USA by Tami Bond.

Wisbech is the birthplace of nineteenth century social reformer Octavia Hill whose main concern was improving the welfare of the inhabitants of cities. As well as being a driving force behind the development of social housing she was also concerned about the availability of open spaces for poor people. She was one of the three founders of the National Trust, set up to preserve places of historic interest or natural beauty for the enjoyment of the British public. It is therefore not surprising that she influenced the development of Wisbech Park which opened in 1869. The park is home to several nationally important heritage landmarks including the impressive Richard Young Memorial Column (Grade II listed, 1872) and the traditional bandstand (Grade II listed, 1908). The park contains a fine arboretum along with several sports areas, bowls, tennis, football and a children’s play area – which has recently undergone a makeover offering new and exciting opportunities for play and fun for a wide range of ages and abilities. The parkrun course is four anticlockwise laps of the perimeter path of the park, starting and finishing by the children’s play area splash pool.

Dodder Valley Park is a suburban linear park in South Dublin. It is a haven for wildlife: among the species to be seen are kingfisher, dipper, grey heron, sparrowhawk and fox. Anglers come to Ireland every year to fish the River Dodder. The fish stock in the river is predominantly wild and introduced brown trout. The parkrun course is along permanent paths and is two laps run clockwise, one small one, then one larger lap.

Margaret River is a small town south of Perth in Western Australia, known for its craft breweries, boutiques and surrounding wineries. The parkrun course is out-and-back in Rotary Park. The park provides a lovely recreational area beside both the forest and the river. Over the years the park has grown from the installation of heritage steam engine ‘Old Kate’, to the development of gardens, a playground, exercise equipment, barbeques, picnic facilities, toilets and an information bay.

Fort Ward parkrun is on Bainbridge Island in the Puget Sound which is connected to Seattle by ferry. The island has become an increasingly affluent bedroom community of Seattle, a 35-minute ride away on the Washington State Ferries. The course is on the Fort Ward Trail. On Saturdays public bus services don’t start on Bainbridge Island until 9am, so a pre-arranged taxi is required to get to the start.

There were four first finishing Hyde Park Harrier this week. These were Samantha Tecwyn in a PB time of 19:10 at Woodhouse Moor; Thomas Naisby in 19:28 at Stewart, Middlesbrough; Rupert Jordan on his first visit to Rising Sun, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in a time of 17:37 and Michael Vargas in 17:38 at Bramley. There were seven other PBs. These were by Muyang Zhang in 27:45 at Woodhouse Moor; Vicente Ponsoda with 19:46 at Cross Flatts; Aisling Davis with 22:17 at Keswick; Chris Harris with 22:37 and Jane Prust with 28:35 at Bramley; Richard Neal with 26:10 at Exmouth; and Rebecca Dawson with 26:30 at Wynyard Woodland, Stockton-on-Tees.

George Anderson & Jonah Kennedy joined the parkrun 25 club with their runs at Woodhouse Moor, as did Dan Lee with his run at Myrtle. ALexandra Natalie Smith joined the parkrun 100 Club with her run at Bradford and Robyn Johnson joined the parkrun 250 club with her run at Woodhouse Moor.

Top female Age Grade% was 77.74% by Samantha Tecwyn at Woodhouse Moor and top male Age Grade% was 76.92% by Rupert Jordan at Rising Sun.

Here are the details of this week’s parkrunning Hyde Park Harriers.
