There were 68 HPH women and 73 HPH men out parkrunning across 63 venues this week.
Thirty-four Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course and amongst these six were new to the HPH list. These were Watermeadows in Towcester by Jonathan Coade; Aston Hall in Birmingham by Manesha Chauhan; Rouse Hill in Australia by Philip Fisher; Owairaka in New Zealand by Sinead O’Hara; Hockgraben in Germany by Emma Connolly; and Festningen in Norway by Maika Ohno.
Watermeadows parkrun is four laps on a hard compacted surface with the last section of 250 metres on grass. The course is on part of the Easton Neston estate that was closed to the public until purchased in 2009 by the Council. The design of the Garden of Easton Neston was influenced by Christopher Wren and implemented by Nicholas Hawksmoor. Iron Age remains have also been found on site. The Watermeadows is now Towcester’s largest public open space and provides the growing community with opportunities for recreation, exercise and wildlife watching. The site has a rich biodiversity, providing an important grassland and wetland habitat. There have been concerns over the cattle on the Watermeadows. Some walkers have been scared off by the presence of the cows.
Aston Hall parkrun is two big laps and two and a half little laps around fields in the park adjacent to Aston Hall. It is on a combination of grass, permanent paths and trail paths. Aston Hall is a Grade I listed Jacobean house designed by John Thorpe. It is a leading example of the Jacobean prodigy house. The house was completed in April 1635. It sits in a large park, part of which became Villa Park, the home ground of the Aston Villa football club. In 1864 the house was bought by Birmingham Corporation, the first historic country house to pass into municipal ownership, and is still owned by Birmingham City Council. It is now a community museum managed by the Birmingham Museums Trust and following a major renovation completed in 2009, is open to the public. In October 2019, the mansion was named as the UK’s top haunted heritage site, according to the Spectrum Paranormal Investigations.
There were two first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Clare Slorach in 19:54 at Norwich and Anna Stocks in 23:18 in her first time at Sandall Park. There were a dozen PBs. These were by Rebecca Dawson with 25:35 at Woodhouse Moor; Andrew Carrier with 18:57 at Norwich; Carol Rogers with 27:03 at oldham; Jack Gordon with 23:18 at Arrow Valley; Peter White with 30:13 at Hillsborough; Helen Beddow with 27:38 at Fountains Abbey; Joe Lawley with 21:07 at Keswick; Poppy Forwood with 42:05 at Armley; Tom McNeillie with 25:41 at The Pastures; Laura Hastings with 31:14 at Morecambe Prom; John Blatherwick with 27:00 at Beacon; and George Sullivan with 23:05 at Belvoir Castle.
Charlotte Victoria Eva joined the parkrun 25 club with her run at Woodhouse Moor. Chloe Brooks joined the parkrun 100 club with her run at Temple Newsam. Amy Ramsden-Young joined the parkrun 250 club with her run at Monsal Trail. Anne Akers joined the excellent excuse for a cake club with her 400th run at Woodhouse Moor – the excellent Rocky Road cake being supplied by Bethany Chambers.
Top female Age Grade% was 75.38% by Clare Slorach at Norwich and top male Age Grade% was 75.87% by Chris Jones at Yarborough Leisure Centre.
