There were 57 HPH Women, 54 HPH Men and 1 undeclared HPH out parkrunning across 40 different venues this week. Thirty-five Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new parkrun course and amongst these two new courses were added to the current HPH list. These courses were Woodgate Valley Country Park by Liz & Chris Jones; and Maryport Prom by Naomi & Tobias Adkins. Woodgate Valley Country Park is a relatively new, but substantial park of 450 acres on the outskirts of Birmingham. For many centuries, Woodgate Valley was a patchwork of farms with the Bourn Brook running through its heart. During the 20th century, the expansion of Birmingham led to modern housing being built all around the edge of the valley, and industrial and business units developed along its southern side. In 1984 the valley was designated a Country Park by the city council. This secured its future as a valuable green resource for all the surrounding communities. As well as now hosting a parkrun the park is home to the Hole Farm Trekking Centre, where children and adults can go pony trekking and learn to ride; and Woodgate Valley Urban Farm has rare breed sheep, Limousin cattle, Vietnamese pot bellied pigs, poultry, pygmy goats, rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals. Maryport is on the Cumbrian coast just outside the Lake District National Park. In Victorian times the town was a major industrial centre with an iron foundry and a shipyard. However in the early years of the 20th century the town suffered a serious decline following the General Strike of 1926 and the opening of a new deep water dock in Workington. By 1933 Maryport became a “ghost town” with 58% of the town’s workforce unemployed.The docks were closed in the 1960s and the last deep pit in the area closed in 1966. Since then there have been some major regeneration projects such as a yacht marina, and it now has a parkrun!
There were three first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Samantha Choma in a PB time of 20:39 at Woodhouse Moor; Indi Lacey in a PB time of 22:41 at Bramley; and Rebecca Gray in 21:29 in her first run at Frickley County. There were nine other PBs. These were by Pablo Tenorio Villegas with 19:32; George Sullivan with 20:36; Alexander Perkin with 22:32; Tariq Roberts with 23:47; and Eleanor Bredin with 29:31 at Woodhouse Moor; Joe Lawley with 22:50 at York; Tom Elcock with 20:35 at Huddersfield; Lucy Rider with 30:49 at Oriam; and Hannah Waller with 30:58 at Roberts Park.
Chloe Brooks joined the parkrun 50 club with her run at Chevin Forest.
Top female Age Grade% was 76.26% by Jane Prust at Elder Park in Glasgow and top male Age Grade% was 72.56% by Tobias Adkins at Maryport Prom.
