There were 63 HPH women, 60 HPH men and 1 undeclared HPH out parkrunning across 46 venues this week. Twenty-two Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst them four new venues were added to the HPH list. These were Mallards Pike by Cara Gates; Hamsterley Forest by Poppy Forwood; Pavillion Gardens by Paul Ramsden; and Lake2Lake Trail in New Zealand by William Watkins. As well as being a beauty spot in England’s largest oak woodland, Mallards Pike in the Forest of Dean is also a hub of activity with cycling trails, Go Ape, watersports and a Gruffalo Orienteering course. There is even a designated dog dip area in the lake. You may think the name refers to a pike (fish) or to a mallard (duck), but it is neither. The pike is down to a turnpike toll road that used to go through the area and Mallard is a corruption of the name of Mr Maller who used to live in the toll keeper’s cottage until the early 1950s. This is unlike Hamsterley Forest near Bishop Auckland, which according to Nicola Forwood is absolutely teeming with hamsters, they are just too small to see on her photos. The Pavillion Gardens in Buxton is a Grade II listed venue and the 23 acres of gardens offer a boating lake with boats and pedalos for hire, a miniature railway, an adventure playground and a children’s play park. The Lake2Lake Trail is an out and back course between Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri on the south island in New Zealand. The start/finish is based at the home of New Zealand’s premium trail race the Kepler Challenge. About a mile in the course goes up what they refer to as a “Fiordland gentle rise” (others call it a hill) before a drop into the Te Anau bird park, the turnaround is at the first enclosure which is for the endangered Takahe bird, whom you are highly likely to see there.

There were three first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Samantha Choma in a PB time of 19:30 at Woodhouse Moor; Anna Stocks in 21:02 at The Cinder Track; and William Watkins in 20:03 at Lake2Lake Trail. There were eleven other PBs. These were by David Grealy with 19:26, Tariq Roberts with 23:12, Karly Stringer with 24:57 and Alice Rich with 27:37 at Woodhouse Moor; Anna Moger with 26:31 at York; Stuart Harris with 29:31 at Rothwell; Ellie Shipp with 29:06 at Roundhay; Richard Neal with 27:18 at Exmouth; Frazer Carr with 17:55 at Great Denham; Nicki Derrick with 25:46 at Warwick Racecourse; and Andrew Nicholls with 23:42 at Foro Italico.

Vicente Ponsoda joined the parkrun 50 club with his run at Woodhouse Moor.

Top female Age Grade% was 76.24% by Samantha Choma at Woodhouse Moor and top male Age Grade% was 77.75% by Michael Vargas at Rothwell.
