There were 65 HPH women, 65 HPH men and 1 undeclared HPH out parkrunning across 49 venues worldwide this week.
Twenty-one Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Three of these courses were new to the HPH list. These were Cuningar Loop in Rutherglen; Ben’s Yard in Ely; and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Horncastle.
The Cuningar Loop is an area of land in Rutherglen, south of the River Clyde near Farme Cross. An isolated meander of the river which was once a Glasgow sewage treatment facility, then infilled with rubble from the city’s slum clearance programme before being abandoned to become overgrown, it has now been transformed into a woodland park connecting across the Clyde to the City of Glasgow and the Commonwealth Games village development via a new footbridge. Cuningar Loop has bike tracks, Scotland’s first outdoor bouldering park, an adventure play area and a range of walks accessible to everyone. The parkrun course is two laps over mixed surfaces including tarmac and tight gravel paths.
Launched in Spring 2023, Ben’s Yard is a rural retail village on the edge of Ely. It is home to a collection of independent retailers offering food, home interiors, fashion, beauty & fitness. It also has playground and a 6 acre event space all beautifully landscaped on the Stuntney Estate with marked trails through woodland, fenland and wildflower meadows. The parkrun is a two lap course on a mixture of gravel path and field which circles a reservoir and has views of the magnificent Ely Cathedral.
Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Horncastle was royally chartered by Queen Elizabeth I in 1571. Originally a boys-only day and boarding school it is now a co-educational grammar school with academy status. The parkrun course is four laps around the grass school playing fields starting opposite the tennis courts and finishing in front of the pavilion. The course is flat and on grass and can be muddy after rain. Trail shoes are advisable, especially in wet conditions. Dogs are not allowed at this event, except assistance dogs.
There were five first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Honor Baldry in 20:31 at Woodhouse Moor; Thomas Moulding in a PB time of 17:35 and Emily Martinson in a PB time of 22:03 at Bramley; Clare Slorach in 21:01 at Potternewton; and Lucy McKerrell in 21:31 at Rheinpark in Cologne, Germany. There were ten other PBs. These were by Meg Coleman with 30:13 at Woodhouse Moor; Rob MacDowall with 17:53 at Rothwell; Abi Thornley with 26:25 at Penrith; Frances Andrews with 26:07 at Keswick; Amy Ramsden-Young with 19:44 at Castle Park; Becky Webb with 26:56 and Helen Beddow with 28:33 at Armley; Kate Pankhurst with 36:25 and Anna Moger with 36:25 at Conyngham Hall; and Laura Hastings with 26:58 at Rothay Park.
Vikki Hawkins joined the parkrun 250 club with her 137th run at Futakotamagawa in Tokyo and her 150th run in Japan. She was joined at Futakotamagawa by her daughter Kara King in their first parkrun together since one at Woodhouse Moor on 16th July 2011.
Top female Age Grade% was 76.01% by Amy Ramsden-Young at Castle Park and top male Age Grade% was 78.65% by Chris Jones at Bramley.
