There were 67 HPH women and 63 HPH men out parkrunning across 49 venues this week.
Thirty-two Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course and amongst them six new courses were added to the HPH list. These were Montrose by Emma Amor; Greenfield Valley in North Wales by Eleanor Williams; Blaise Castle in Bristol by Cara Gates; Porterstown in Ireland by Chris Worfolk; Mattheiser Weiher in Germany by Liz and Chris Jones; and Northside Beltline in Atlanta, USA by Grace Roberts.
Montrose parkrun course is a single loop on the cycle path around the old aerodrome – which was the first operational military aerodrome to be established in the United Kingdom when it opened on 26th February 1913.
Greenfield Valley is an out-and-back course from the town of Holywell – The Lourdes of Wales – which takes its name from the world famous St Winifride’s Holy Well, one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. The Well is a Grade 1 listed building and it is claimed to be the oldest visited pilgrimage site in Great Britain. The water is said to produce miraculous cures. As well as passing the Well & Shrine the parkrun course turns around just beyond Basingwerk Abbey – the evocative remains of a medieval abbey.
Blaise Castle is a sham castle folly built in 1766 by sugar merchant and investor in the slave trade Thomas Farr. The castle sits within the Blaise Castle Estate in Henbury near Bristol. The estate was sold to Bristol City Council in 1926, to preserve it from development. The castle and its 650 acres of parkland are now open to the public.
Porterstown Park is in Castleknock in the west of Dublin. The parkrun course is flat and three laps of the perimeter of park. A €2 million all-weather, cutting-edge and floodlit running track and sporting field has recently opened in the park. At the opening ceremony Mayor Howard Mahony, said: “I am exceptionally proud to stand here today to officially open this magnificent sporting facility. Delivery of this key project is testament to our commitment to fostering a healthy and active lifestyle for our residents in Castleknock and the surrounding Dublin 15 area. It is a place where dreams will be chased, records will be broken, and sporting talents will be nurtured. I am confident that this state-of-the-art recreation hub will inspire our community to engage in sports and will serve as a centre for outstanding athletic achievements.”
Mattheiser Weiher (or St. Matthias Park) in the south of Trier in Germany is described as a “stretch of pastoral landscape that offers a refuge for friends of nature and allotment gardening.” The parkrun course is three laps on asphalt and gravel roads within the park. Chris Jones set the highest Age Grade% on the day and also bagged the VM65-69 record for the course.
Northside Beltline parkrun is at the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center in Atlanta. It is an out-and-back course on a new paved surface. According to the official course description: “Participants will enjoy being surrounded by trees for first portion and then alongside golf course for second portion.”
There was one first finishing Hyde Park Harriers this week. This was Thomas Moulding in a PB time of 17:36 at Peel. There were 6 other PBs. These were by Caitlin Crockford with 29:02 at Wakefield Thornes; Michael Godsall in 24:19 at Gunnersbury; Aisling Davis with 23:38 at Aylesbury; Joe Lawley with 22:21 at Cross Flatts; Daniel Waas with 25:51 at Doddington Hall; and Peter Noren with 18:01 at Alstervorland in Germany.
Top female Age Grade% was 66.92% by Jane Prust at Woodhouse Moor and top male Age Grade% was 73.48% by Thomas Moulding at Peel.
