There were 57 HPH women and 61 HPH men out parkrunning across 46 venues this week.
Twenty-one Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. One of these was new to the HPH list. This was Fulwell Quarry in Sunderland by Lee Taylor. This parkrun course is two laps on an undulating multi terrain trail around the perimeter of fields adjacent to the Fulwell Quarry Nature Reserve. The nature reserve is of national importance due its rare Magnesian Limestone geology. Fulwell was an agricultural village which became famous for its quarrying. Stone was quarried here for building purposes and lime burning for over 200 years. The nearby kilns and Fulwell Mill are built of Magnesian Limestone from the quarry and this stone features strikingly in many local walls and buildings, and in hundreds of private and public gardens within Sunderland and South Shields. The wildflower meadows and grasslands in the nature reserve are favourable habitats for many butterflies, such as the Large Skipper, the Small Skipper and the Dingy Skipper. The Dingy Skipper is probably the most moth-like British butterfly and normally rests with its wings in a moth-like fashion. This well-camouflaged, brown and grey butterfly can be confused with the Grizzled Skipper, the Mother Shipton Moth or the Burnet Companion Moth. Look closely and you may see the rare woodlouse-hunter spider. Plants include wild strawberry and yellow-wort. Looking to the north and east, there are good views of the Cleadon Hills and the North Sea coast.
There were three first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Thomas Moulding in a PB time of 17:31 and Emily Martinson in 23:07 at Potternewton; and Peter Noren in 17:39 at Alstervorland in Germany.
Cara Gates joined the parkrun 250 club with her run at Woodhouse Moor.
There were eight other PBs. These were by Craig Morland with 20:36 at Woodhouse Moor; Clare Slorach with 20:22 at Roundhay; Joe Lawley with 21:00 at Workington; Alex Greenwood with 19:49 at Keswick; Amy Latham with 2:15 at Hove Promenade; Frances Andrews with 31:27 at Middleton Woods; Richard Cartwright with 24:03 at Potternewton; and Debbie Brown with 30:51 at Chevin Forest.
Top female Age Grade% was 73.90% by Clare Slorach at Roundhay and top male Age Grade% was 74.37% by Gordon Crawford at Woodhouse Moor.
