There were 63 HPH Women and 64 HPH Men out parkrunning across 30 different venues this week. Fifty-five Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new parkrun course and amongst these one new course was added to the current HPH list – You Yangs in Victoria, Australia by Tom Elcock. You Yangs Regional Park is part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape in the traditional Country of the Wadawurrung People. The distinctive granite peaks of this park rise abruptly from the flat plains below. Flinders Peak and Big Rock have panoramic views out to Melbourne, which is just an hour away. The park provides a range of habitats for wildlife. More than 200 species of birds have been recorded and koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, brush-tail possums, echidnas and lizards are commonly seen.
The biggest contingent of Hyde Park Harriers this week wasn’t at Woodhouse Moor, which was celebrating its 15th birthday! It was at Westpark – not even a new one at West Park in Leeds, but Westpark in Munich. Forty Hyde Park Harriers made the trip to Germany. They boosted the numbers there to 174 – a new course record. Tobias Adkins led the way being first finisher in 17:49. The Westpark is a large urban public park. It contains an impressive rose garden and four asian gardens including the very first authentic Chinese garden in Europe. The parkrun course goes around an artificial lake – The Mollsee – which is popular with model boat enthusiasts. A missed opportunity to recreate the sinking of the Bismark. The park also contains two popular beer gardens.
Vikki Hawkins didn’t add any new courses out in Japan this week, but she did add a new parkrun task. She volunteered at her local parkrun. Being pretty much the only non-Japanese volunteer there, she was able to both help and cheer on the twenty or so UK runners who turned up.
There were three other first finishers. These were Honor Baldry in a PB time of 20:18 at Woodhouse Moor; Amy Ramsden-Young in 19:58 at University of Stirling; and Rebecca Gray in a PB time of 21:58 at Bowling Park. There were seven other PBs. These were by Richard Knighton with 18:47 at Woodhouse Moor; Tom Williams with 20:39 at Newport, South Wales – the venue of the parkrun Ambassador Conference; Alice Young with 25:18 at Mile End; Robin Culshaw with 26:23 and Steve Brown with 28:44 at Chevin Forest; and Aron Fulton with 21:04 and Alexandra Natalie Smith with 28:13 at Roberts Park.
Emily Williams joined the parkrun 25 club with her run at Westpark and Gemma Newman & Gareth Jowett joined the parkrun 50 club with their runs at Woodhouse Moor & Roundhay respectively.
Top female Age Grade% was 74.62% by Amy Ramsden-Young at University of Stirling and top male Age Grade% was 75.78% by Michael Vargas at Woodhouse Moor.
