parkrundays 27th & 29th May 2023

There were 61 HPH women and 50 HPH men out parkrunning across 45 venues this week. The statistics are slightly different again this week because in the Netherlands there were parkruns on Whit Monday – 29th May as well as parkrunday and three Hyde Park Harriers made the trip over to bag that extra parkrun.

Forty-one Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst them four new courses were added to the HPH list. These were Schoterbos, Haarlem in the Netherlands on Whit Monday by Poppy Forwood, Liz Jones and Chris Jones; Delaware and Raritan Canal in New Jersey, USA by Chris Harris; Rheinpark in Cologne, Germany by Peter Noren; and Bramshall Road, Uttoxeter by Michelle Dickson.

Schoterbos park is in the city of Haarlem within the metropolitan area of Amsterdam. The park was developed as part of the fight against unemployment in the 1930s on the former country estate of Sparenhove. It opened in 1936. It includes a swimming pool, school gardens, a petting zoo and the Haarlem football stadium. In recent years the park has been renewed with new paths and cycle paths, play facilities, an enriched tree stock and a hill with a viewpoint.

The Delaware and Raritan Canal parkrun course is out and back along a section of this canal. The canal was built in the 1830s to link the Delaware and Raritan rivers and provde a reliable means of freight transportation between Philadelphia and New York City. The canal’s use waned with the introduction of railways and it ceased operation by the mid 1930s, but in 1974, most of the canal system was declared a New Jersey state park. It remains one today, and is used for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. A graded natural-surface trail along the side of the canal, which was the tow path that mules used to tow barges on the canal before steam powered barges, is now used for hiking, jogging, bicycling, horseback riding and parkrunning. The parkrun course starts and finishes adjacent to the Colonial Park Arboretum and Gardens. The arboretum area contains several gardens: the Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden with more than 3,000 roses of 325 varieties; the Fragrance and Sensory Garden; and the Perennial Garden.

The Rheinpark – which Wikipedia helpfully tells me translates as Rhine park – is a large urban park along the right bank of the river Rhine in Cologne, Germany. Children are particularly attracted by the numerous playgrounds and the children’s train with a railway crossing and the Kölner Jugendpark, with an adjacent miniature golf. The Rheinpark is also home to the “Cologne Rhine Cable Car” which offers an unforgettable panoramic view of the Rhine. The park includes a beach club, an open-air theater and a Roman Thermae styled public bath (the Claudius-Therme). It was voted Germany’s best park in 2007.

Bramshall Road Park situated on the western edge of Uttoxeter is the town’s principal park. In 1921 12 acres of land was bought by businessman Mr Charles Henry Elkes for £999. He asked the town to accept it as a recreation ground as he stated how few opportunities there had been for boys of his generation to use recreation facilities. On August 7th 1923 the land was vested in the Uttoxeter Urban District Council on the understanding that it be used for a public recreation ground and be supported, improved and maintained as such. The park has ample parking, a play area, bowls green, tennis courts, a skate park, multi use games area and picnic areas. It has features such as Picknall Brook where you can see kingfishers darting backwards and forwards, wild flowers and a small area of woodland planting.

There were six first finishing Hyde Park Harriers this week. These were Anna Stocks in 20:43 at Barnsley; Robin Culshaw in 27:31 at Bramley; Thomas Moulding in 18:34 & Vicky Houghton in a PB time of 23:35 at Middleton Woods; Frazer Carr in a PB time of 18:31 at Chevin Forest; and Peter Noren in 17:55 at Rheinpark. There were six other PBs. These were by Eleanor Williams with 25:14 at Finsbury; George Webster with 31:28 at Bradford; Jonathan Coade with 18:26 at Pontefract; Claire Lyons with 25:03 at Roundhay; Alexander Perkin with 22:25 at Middleton Woods; and Anna Moger with 28:09 at Millfield.

Joe Lawley joined the parkrun 100 club with his run at Woodhouse Moor.

Top female Age Grade% was 71.49% by Jane Prust at Penistone and top male Age Grade% was 76.91% by Chris Jones at Schoterbos.

Here are the details of this week’s parkrunning Hyde Park Harriers.
