parkrundays 29th April and 1st May 2023

There were 52 HPH women and 55 HPH men out parkrunning across 43 venues this week. The statistics are slightly different this week because in Norway there were parkruns on Labour Day – 1st May as well as parkrunday and four Hyde Park Harriers made the trip over to bag that extra parkrun. Twenty-eight Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst them six new courses were added to the HPH list. These were Horinouchi koen in Japan by Vikki Hawkins; Ekebergsletta in Norway by Tom Elcock, Liz Jones and Chris Jones; Løvstien in Norway by Poppy Forwood; Nansenparken in Norway by Tom Elcock; Russborough in County Wicklow, Ireland by Rebecca Gray, Caroline Young, Matthew Gray and John Blatherwick; and Philips Park in Manchester by Sam Dooley. Horinouchi koen parkrun is in Matsuyama – the largest city on the island of Shikoku. The parkrun is adjacent to Matsuyama Castle Park – one of the top cherry blossom spots in Japan. Matsuyama is also renowned for its hot spring and public bathhouse Dōgo Onsen. The legendary health giving properties of the spring makes the baths extremely popular and they are the inspiration for the Yubaba’s bathhouse in Studio Ghibli’s Academy Award winning animated film Spirited Away. Ekebergsletta and Nansenparken are both in Oslo. Ekebergsletta is a large grass covered area located on Ekeberg plateau. It’s claim to fame is that Roald Amundsen landed his Airship Norge here for a few hours in 1926 on his way to towards the North Pole. The foundation of the mooring mast used by the airship can still be found. Nansenparken is a new 200 acre park built on the site of Olso’s former main airport which closed in 1998. Løvstien is in Bergen – almost 200 miles west of Oslo. The parkrun course is along a section of the Løvstien trail – a popular but demanding hiking trail. Russborough parkrun is two laps in front of the impressive Russborough House – a classical Palladian villa with a frontage of 210m which makes it possibly the longest house in Ireland. The surrounding park contains a 2 km maze, craft courtyard of artisan studios and The National Bird of Prey Centre. Philips Park opened on 22 August 1846 as one of the world’s first municipal parks, intended for free use by the public to encourage a mixing of the classes. The park is 2 miles east of Manchester city centre and covers almost 31 acres. The park is adjacent to the City of Manchester Stadium and the Manchester Velodrome.

The HPH ladies provided all four first finishing Hyde Park Harriers this week. These were Anna Stocks in 21:56 at Roundhay; Cara Gates in 22:58 Cleethorpes; Sophie Studholme in 24:48 at Bower Park; and Rebecca Gray in 24:24 at Russborough. There were five PBs. These were by Tariq Roberts with 22:31 and Richard Cartwright with 24:05 at Woodhouse Moor; Jane Prust with 28:13 and Stephen Prust with 34:45 at Glossop; and Peter Wilkinson with 25:12 at Roberts Park.

Robert Butler and Stephen Prust joined the parkrun 100 club with their runs at Woodhouse Moor and Glossop respectively. Jonathan Carpenter joined the parkrun 25 club with his run at Woodhouse Moor.

Top female Age Grade% was 71.83% by Jane Prust at Glossop and top male Age Grade% was 75.85% by Michael Vargas at Woodhouse Moor.

Here are the details of this week’s parkrunning Hyde Park Harriers.
