There were 62 HPH women and 67 HPH men out parkrunning across 51 venues this week. The statistics are slightly different yet again this week because in Denmark on Constitution Day – Monday 5th June and Sweden on Swedish National Day – Tuesday 6th June there were extra parkruns as well as parkrunday. Three Hyde Park Harriers made the trip over to Denmark and two of them also popped over to Sweden a day later to bag extra parkruns.
The next additional parkrun day is scheduled for 1st July in Canada for Canada Day, however this is a Saturday, so there may not be additional parkruns at all.
Thirty-two Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst them three new courses were added to the HPH list, all of them international. These were the inaugural Inis Meáin parkrun in Ireland by Liz Jones and Chris Jones; and Växjösjön and Billdalsparken in Sweden by Tom Elcock and Poppy Forwood respectively.
Inis Meáin is the middle of the Aran Islands at the mouth of Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland. It is 4km long and 2.5km wide and has a population of 187. The island has a wind farm which runs its desalination plant and fuels the electric car. The parkrun course is two-laps starting and finishing at the Community Centre on very quiet public roads.
Växjösjön is a lake in the in Växjö Municipality, Sweden. The parkrun course is a single lap around the lake. Växjö has called itself “The Greenest City in Europe” since 2007. In 1996 the city adopted a policy for the elimination of the use of fossil fuels by 2030. By 2014, Växjö’s CO2 emissions had dropped to 2.4 tonnes per capita, well below the Leeds value of 5.2 tonnes. Växjö is the city in which the photograph “A Woman Hitting a Neo-Nazi With Her Handbag” was taken in 1985 by Hans Runesson.
Billdalsparken is eight miles south of Gothenburg in Sweden. The park has walking trails through the forest with places for picnics and a nice children’s playground.
There were three first finishing Hyde Park Harriers this week. These were Rupert Jordan in 17:15 at Belton House; Thomas Moulding in 17:37 at Monsal Trail; and Honor Baldry in 22:49 at Fort William. There were four PBs. These were by Nigel Wallis with 20 :05 at Woodhouse Moor; Alexander Perkin with 20:57 at Heslington; Jonathan Coade with 18:29 at Salcey Forest; and Steve Worthington with 22:38 at Chevin Forest.
Tom Roper joined the parkrun 25 club with his run at Sandringham and Xenia Perry joined the parkrun 100 club with her run at Woodhouse Moor.
Top female Age Grade% was 72.68% by Jane Prust at Bowling Park and top male Age Grade% was 78.55% by Rupert Jordan at Belton House.
