Rock & Roll Liverpool
After the disappointment of the Leeds Half Marathon where I got my pacing all wrong I had some unfinished business with the distance. While chatting at work the Rock & Roll Liverpool Half Marathon got mentioned, at first I wasn’t to interested until the bling was mentioned.
So on Sunday I found myself on the start line in Liverpool with a plan to run as consistent as possible. The route was a lot better than I expected, we started near the arena on the waterfront, did a bit through the city running past the famous Caven club and up China town which I was very impressed with. There was a few nice parks as well before the run back along the water front for the last 4 miles.
The route wasn’t hilly, a slight climb around miles 4 and 5 was about it. My run was going well and I was enjoying it, the bands playing every mile was very good. It wasn’t the biggest supported event so this made a big difference. The night before I had looked into pacing and come up with 9.20 min miles which would get me a PB of 2 hours 2 minutes. As I hit the 9 mile mark I was averaging 9.06 but when I hit the water front the legs cried enough. It had been a busy week what with the Otley 10 mile and the Full Bronte 5 so the last 4 miles became a long slog. I eventually got back to the finish and in a PB time of 2.02 so was still very happy.
As we finished I collected my excellent medal and T-shirt and went to find the family who I had seen cheer me in. There was a finish concert which was on for most of the day and the atmosphere was excellent. This is definitely an event I will do again, the course is a PB potential one and it has a nice feel about it. I reckon we could have a HPH weekend away.
Which brings me back to the bling. If you like to collect medals you can get 3 in one weekend. Sign up for the 5k on the Saturday, then the half or full marathon on the Sunday and you get medals for both of these and then a Rock encore medal.
There was a few Hyde Park Harriers at the event. Phil Hammond was the only one doing the Full marathon while Tom and Claire Mason, Sue, Jaz and myself did the Half.
