The turn of the year parkruns 2022/3
There was another chance for a double dose of parkrun this week with New Year’s Eve on parkrunday and many courses also having a special New Year’s Day parkrun on Sunday. Over the two days 71 HPH Women and 72 HPH Men went parkrunning across 70 venues, with 33 HPH Women and 28 HPH Men parkrunning on both days. Of these 61 that ran on both days, 23 stuck to the same course each day.
On New Year’s Eve 57 HPH Women and 61 HPH Men went parkrunning across 52 different venues. Twenty four Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst these two new courses were added to the current HPH list. These were Panshanger by Philip Fisher and Church Mead near Amersham by Chloe Brooks. Panshanger was a large country house located between the outer edge of Hertford and Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire. The house was demolished in the 1950s, but the estate was opened as a country park and nature reserve in 2014 after owners Tarmac finished extracting sand and gravel from the site. The park consists of wetlands, grasslands and reedbeds which serve as a home for a wide variety of damselfly and dragonfly species. The park is also home to kingfishers, waterfowl and osprey. It contains the largest maiden (not pollarded) oak in the country, with a circumference of 7.6 metres. It is believed to have been planted by Queen Elizabeth I. The parkrun course goes past the tree. The course at Church Mead, Amersham Old Town is run entirely on trail paths. It goes past the Amersham Martyrs Memorial which commemorates the deaths of seven local Protestant martyrs and (six men and one woman) who were burnt at the stake close by in 1506 and 1521.
There were two first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Samantha Choma in her first time at Penrhyn in 20:33 and Robin Culshaw in 23:40 at Bramley. There were eight PBs. These were by Richard Knighton with 18:40 and Jack Rose with 19:45 at York; Sam Edwards with 48:51 at Roundhay; Emma Whitlow with 32:58 at Temple Newsam; Jonathan Spain with 18:42 at Birkenhead; George Sullivan with 21:11 at Sherwood Pines; Indi Lacey with 28:03 at Dalby Forest; and Eleanor Williams with 24:03 at Lordship Recreation Ground.
Colin Tranter, Ruth Maltby-Sinkler, Christopher Mann and Jonathan Tecwyn all joined the parkrun 50 club with their runs at Woodhouse Moor, Hull, Southwick Country and Penrhyn respectively.
Top female Age Grade% was 72.83% by Jane Prust at Woodhouse Moor and top male Age Grade% was 74.86% by Michael Vargas at Potternewton.

On New Year’s Day 47 HPH Women and 39 HPH Men went parkrunning across 31 different venues. Twelve Hyde Park Harriers tried out a new course and amongst these one new course was added to the current HPH list – Coole in Ireland by David Grealy. Coole Park is a nature reserve of approximately 1,000 acres located a few miles west of Gort, County Galway. Within the park is an Autograph Tree – a copper beech – on which famous visitors to the park carved their initials. These include George Bernard Shaw, WB Yates and Seán O’Casey. WB Yates wrote a lyric poem called “The Wild Swans at Coole” while staying at Coole between 1916 and 1917.
There were no first finishing Hyde Park Harriers but eleven started the new year with a PB. These were Vicky Houghton with 23:38, Peter North with 24:12 and Alison Oppal with 29:42 at Woodhouse Moor; George Sullivan with 21:28 at Colwick; Grace Roberts with 28:47 at Milton Keynes; Alexander Perkin with 25:44 at Pontefract; Naomi Miles with 24:45 at Darlington South Park; Rob Riley with 19:03 at Blickling; Indi Lacey with 26:55 at Dalby Forest; Daisy Wales with 25:56 at Sutton Park; and Will Jeeps with 21:19 at Cliffe Castle.
Will Jeeps joined the parkrun 50 club with his run at Cliffe Castle.
Top female Age Grade% was 72.27% by Amy Ramsden Young at Victoria and top male Age Grade% was 68.08% by Richard Garrett at Univerity of Stirling.
