This week saw the HPH takeover at Woodhouse Moor where 43 Hyde Park Harriers managed to get a run in alongside all the HPH volunteers. Overall there were 42 HPH women and 70 HPH men out parkrunning across 45 venues worldwide.
Seventeen Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course. Two of these courses were new to the HPH list. These were Esbjerg in Denmark by Steven Binns and Flint Castle in Wales by Alys Griffiths.
Esbjerg is a seaport city on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in southwest Denmark. By road it is 185 miles west of Copenhagen. While it has a long history of ferry services to England, the city is by no means a tourist destination. Lonely Planet remarked that “nobody comes to Esbjerg for a holiday, in fact, as with many industrial ports, most visitors rush through as quickly as possible”. The parkrun course is a 5km loop on forest paths (gravel and soil) in Vognsbølparken. It is described as being “very running friendly”.
Built between 1277 and 1284, Flint was the first castle of what would later become known as Edward I’s “Iron Ring”. A chain of fortresses designed to encircle North Wales and oppress the Welsh. The site was chosen for its strategic position in North East Wales. The castle was only one day’s march from Chester, supplies could be brought along the River Dee and there was a ford nearby across to England that could be used at low tide. The parkrun course is out and back starting and finishing at the Castle. It is on trail paths following the Wales Coastal Path around Flint Dock and onto Flint Foreshore. The course is mostly flat.
There were no first finishing Hyde Park Harriers! However, there were three second finishers. These were Steve Binns in 19:29 at Esbjerg; Clare Slorach in a PB time of 20:43 at Rothwell; and Clare Evans in 23:14 at Bramley. There were seven other PBs. These were by Nathan Jeffs with 21:00, Aisling Davis with 21:08 and Caite Burke with 22:08 at Woodhouse Moor; Alexandra Natalie Smith with 28:00 at Lister Park; Andrew Carrier with 21:02 at Rothwell; Lara Chapman with 30:13 at Gateshead; and Oliver Pryse with 23:17 at Walmer and Deal Seafront.
There were no new members of any of the parkrun clubs this week.
Top female Age Grade% was 73.17% by Carol Rogers at Heaton and top male Age Grade% was 73.91% by Steve Binns at Esbjerg.
