There were 58 HPH women and 65 HPH men out parkrunning across 49 venues this week.
Twenty-eight Hyde Park Harriers travelled to try out a new course and amongst these four were new to the HPH list. These were Harrow Lodge in Havering by Monika Pugeviciute; Five Arches in Radstock by Sarah and James Underwood; Castlemaine in Australia by Louise Gardham; and Ballito in South Africa by Becky Webb.
Harrow Lodge Park, Hornchurch is the largest urban park within the London Borough of Havering. It was established in 1937 when 42 acres of land purchased by London City Council was combined with 35 acres to be used as a public open space was donated by Costain as part of a planning application. The park has a varied landscape with woodland areas, amenity grassland, conservation areas and two lakes. The lakes are home to a number of aquatic bird species including Mute Swans, Canada Geese, Egyptian Geese, Grey Heron and the occasional Cormorant. In 1961 an area of the park called the Garden for the Blind opened. This garden had wider pathways and aromatic plants with a centrepiece dolphin fountain creating sound for visitors. Though the garden declined over time, it has been revived in recent years through the efforts of volunteers and is known as the Secret Garden. The parkrun course is a single lap on a mixture of grass and tarmac paths. In winter and wet conditions trail shoes are recommended.
The route of Five Arches parkrun in Radstock is along a flat, tarmac path utilising the old Somerset and Dorset Railway on the Norton-Radstock Greenway. The path passes by woodland, fields and through the Five Arch railway tunnel. The parkrun course consists of one short loop and one longer loop, starting and finishing in the same place.
Castlemaine parkrun in Australia is a three lap anti-clockwise course through Castlemaine Botanical Gardens. The gardens were carved out of the traditional lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung people and fenced off in 1860 in the heat of Victoria’s gold rush. The gardens are an outstanding example of a regional public garden created in colonial Victoria. The oldest tree in the gardens is an oak that was planted in 1863 to celebrate the marriage of the Prince & Princess of Wales. It now stands 22 metres tall with a canopy of over 35 metres and was named the 2021 Victorian Tree of the Year by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). Castlemaine XXXX beer is named after the town where Castlemaine Brewers was founded. However, the beer itself is now brewed in Milton, Brisbane.
Ballito is an affluent coastal town located in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Ballito is about 40 kilometres north of Durban and 24 kilometres south of KwaDukuza. The Ballito parkrun course is in Sugar Rush Park – featuring areas such as the Jump Park – an all-weather indoor trampoline park; tree trails – a high ropes obstacle course; Unicorn Slime – the experience of making slime and getting crafty; and Ndlondlo Snake and Reptile Park.
There were three first finishing Hyde Park Harriers. These were Michael Vargas in 18:07 at Roundhay; Greg Judges in 20:23 at Armley; and Gary Grant in 21:35 at Knocknacarra in Ireland. There were nine PBs. These were by Matthew Drake with 26:13 and Dan Lee with 50:12 at Woodhouse Moor; Conor Gould with 24:42 at Whitley Bay; Vicky Houghton with 23:53 at Huddersfield; Joe Lawley with 22:49 and Sarah Jewers with 26:56 at Roundhay; Abdu Ahmed with 16:54 at Storeys Field; Peter Noren with 17:34 at Alstervorland; and Jessica Wanless with 32:09 at Kagerzoom.
Daniel Roberts joined the parkrun 50 club with his run at California Country.
Top female Age Grade% was 67.95% by Helen Noyes at Woodhouse Moor and top male Age Grade% was 76.33% by Abdu Ahmed at Storeys Field.
